Original job description

Analog Front-End (AFE) Test Engineer | Neurotech / BCI | San Diego, CA (Onsite)

I’m partnering with a venture-backed neurotechnology company developing an implantable brain-computer interface for people with severe paralysis. The company is in clinical trials and is building out a San Diego R&D team for its next-generation platform.

They’re looking for an early-career engineer with strong analog fundamentals to own in-house testing of a custom neural recording chip. It’s a hands-on bench role and a strong first industry job for someone coming out of a graduate program or research lab. You’ll be mentored directly by the company’s senior chip lead.

WHAT THE JOB IS

An outside design firm builds the chip. Your job is to verify it independently. You’ll set up the lab, power up the first chips, and measure how well they actually perform against spec, using your own equipment and methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Build and maintain the bench setups, fixtures and instrumentation used to test the chip Help write test plans and protocols with the chip lead Measure key analog performance across every channel: noise, CMRR, power consumption, crosstalk Support testing of the chip as part of the full system, including the electrode array Write clear test reports that feed the company’s design documentation Grow into the owner of the full analog test program as the chip moves toward production

QUALIFICATIONS

BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering or related field Coursework, thesis or research in analog front-end or biopotential amplifier design, such as low-noise or chopper amplifiers, or SAR or delta-sigma ADCs Familiarity with electrode impedance and the electrode-tissue interface (e.g., EIS, equivalent circuit modeling) Hands-on lab experience with oscilloscopes, source-measure units, signal generators and noise measurement Python or MATLAB for data analysis and test automation No industry experience required. Medical device training is provided.

WHY CONSIDER IT

Hands-on ownership of first silicon on a novel neural interface program Direct mentorship from a senior chip lead A growing San Diego team working on technology that restores function for patients
