Cambridge, US | full time | Job ID: 11886
About the role:
We are seeking a detail-oriented, highly motivated Staff Accountant who is ready to make an impact in a dynamic and rapidly evolving organization. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this role Staff Accountant will own key areas of the monthly and quarterly close, with a primary focus on cash, prepaid expenses, intangible assets, and lease accounting. The Staff Accountant will collaborate closely with Local Business Planning and Analysis (BPA), the Global Finance departments including Global Financial Reporting & Accounting (Global FRA) in Germany, and other cross-functional partners; execute key controls in a SOX environment; and support special projects that strengthen accounting processes and reporting. The successful candidate will thrive amid ambiguity and change, proactively identify and solve problems rather than accept the status quo, and help the U.S. organization evolve into a scalable, high-performing organization.
Your contribution:
- Own assigned month-end and quarter-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, variance analysis, and timely resolution of reconciling items.
- Manage accounting for cash, including bank reconciliations, cash activity analysis, and coordination with Treasury and other stakeholders to ensure complete and accurate recording.
- Maintain prepaid expense schedules, prepare amortization entries, and evaluate balances for appropriate classification and recognition.
- Maintain intangible asset records and supporting schedules, including additions, amortization, impairment considerations, reconciliations, and related reporting.
- Perform lease accounting activities, including maintenance of right-of-use asset and lease liability schedules, preparation of entries, reconciliations, and support for disclosure requirements.
- Support accounting and reporting activities related to commercial operations and revenue processes together with the respective experts for this area.
- Collaborate with Local Business Planning and Analysis (BPA) to investigate actual-to-budget variances, align accounting and forecast assumptions, and provide clear, timely financial information.
- Partner with the Global Financial Reporting & Accounting (Global FRA) in Germany on intercompany matters, reporting requirements, technical accounting topics, and alignment with global policies and processes.
- Serve as the executor for assigned key controls in the SOX environment, maintaining complete and accurate evidence, meeting control deadlines, and promptly escalating and remediating identified issues.
- Support internal and external audits, including preparation of requested schedules, documentation, and responses related to financial statement and control testing.
- Identify root causes, challenge inefficient or unclear practices, and implement practical improvements that enhance accuracy, timeliness, scalability, and control.
- Support special projects, systems implementations, process documentation, and cross-functional initiatives as business needs evolve.
- Help develop repeatable processes and scalable ways of working that support the U.S. organization’s growth into a mature, high-performing organization.
- Perform other accounting, reporting, and ad hoc responsibilities as assigned.
A good match:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within a public company, pharmaceutical or biotechnology organization, or another complex, regulated environment is required.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS is required, and US-GAAP is preferred.
- Experience collaborating with an international corporate organization are preferred.
- Experience with account reconciliations, journal entries, and close activities; experience with cash, prepaids, intangible assets, or lease accounting is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of internal controls and experience executing controls in a SOX environment.
- In-depth knowledge with the integrated ERP system SAP (preferred) or other similar systems.
- In the best-case operational experience rolling out SAP.
- Strong Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Highly motivated, intellectually curious, and committed to investigating issues, identifying root causes, and driving matters through resolution.
- Able to prioritize effectively, exercise sound judgment, and deliver accurate work in an unstructured, fast-paced, and continuously changing environment.
- Collaborative and service-oriented, with strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships across functions, locations, and time zones.
- A continuous-improvement mindset and a desire to help build scalable processes, stronger controls, and a high-performing U.S. finance organization.
Your benefits and remuneration:
Expected Pay Range: $85,700/year to $137,100/year + benefits, annual bonus & equity (bonus and equity is variable and dependent on company and individual performance). Compensation for the role will depend on several factors, including responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
