Original job description
At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.
The Embedded Controls Engineer - AEH will work as part of a multidisciplinary team developing products for use in BETA’s electric aircraft and customer platforms. As a Embedded Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for developing embedded software and integrating it into hardware during early product development and as needed to support full-scale production. This role bridges the gap between hardware and software at the circuit board level in an aerospace environment with a focus on controls and embedded systems. You will play a key role in the development of control software for aerospace electronic equipment (i.e. Flight Controllers, Flight Management Systems, Battery Management Systems, Aircraft Charge Control Systems, Electric Motor Controllers etc.). You will design, develop, and test low-level source code, model-based software, and control algorithms executing at the microcontroller level. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of the hardware/software interface typical of microcontrollers, and how to configure the hardware through software to meet architecture and functional requirements.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
- Design, develop, and test low-level source code, model-based software, and control algorithms
- Develop and write code to support control algorithms
- Troubleshoot hardware/software issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers
- Assist in hardware bringup as needed on prototype products
- Define, capture, and analyze HW/SW interface definitions
- Support the design team in hardware and software architecture trade studies, subsystem development and definition
Minimum Qualifications:
- S. (M.S. desired) in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering,
- 3-5 years of experience in embedded software development
- Well-versed with MATLAB and Simulink or other model-based design and code generation
- Experienced with closed-loop control applications or modelling
Above and Beyond Qualifications:
- Electric motor control experience
- Electromagnet design, development and control experience
- Experience with ARM microcontrollers (STM32, TMS570, AM26x series) and C2000 microcontrollers
- Electromagnetic actuator development experience.
- Hands-on experience building and assembling system test setups
- Experience with rapid prototype development of hardware and software
- Experience with power electronics an/or switched power systems
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Team Member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activities (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stairs), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery surfaces), bending, reaching, handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, picking, punching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, pallet jack, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, Team Members may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield, respirators), gloves, and hearing protection. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or automobile. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization. Some positions entail working with small parts/components. Team Members must have excellent hand-eye coordination and good manual dexterity in both hands. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. We are happy to clarify role-specific requirements during the interview process. The wage listed here reflects our best faith estimate for this role. We pay competitively and base compensation on a variety of factors including skills, experience, industry background, and the evolving needs of the role.
