Original job description
As the Senior Engineering Manager for In-Home Order Fulfillment, you will lead the engineering teams behind In-Home Routing, Provider & Market Management, and Appointment Readiness & Tracking. Together these tier-1, event-driven systems decide who performs each delivery and installation appointment, when and where, and how the customer stays informed, with direct customer and financial impact, especially in seasonal peaks such as holiday. The ideal candidate is a technical and people leader who can lead multiple engineering teams, develop managers and technical leads, and partner with Product, Operations, and carrier and vendor partners to deliver predictably and keep critical systems reliable. This role is hybrid, which means you will work some days on site at a Best Buy location and some days virtually from home or another non-Best Buy location. Starting in February 2027, this means in office Monday through Thursday, with Friday as the remote day. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.
What you'll do
- Recruit, build and lead engineering teams responsible for a large capability or several smaller ones; set team objectives and key results with Product and Experience Design, and set clear expectations.
- Run regular 1:1s and manage performance for the entire team; mentor engineering managers, technical leads and newer leaders, with development plans tied to the Engineering Job Family.
- Build a staffing strategy aligned to the portfolio's investment strategy; backfill quickly with high-quality, diverse talent, and build a culture of inclusion and accountability.
- Drive predictable delivery: take an active part in planning, keep scope and priorities stable, surface risks and trade-offs early, and use delivery metrics (throughput, carryover, scope change, cycle time) to remove impediments.
- Own the quality and integrity of the SDLC; adopt recommended tools and standards, and participate in code and architecture reviews.
- Work with the Architecture Review Board and other technical leaders to define technology strategy and guide solution design across teams and systems; evaluate and recommend libraries, frameworks and patterns.
- Ensure team output is monitorable and highly available; drive instrumentation, alerting and tracing standards so failures are detected by monitoring, not by customers or field operations.
- Own production support: build and maintain on-call schedules, participate in the rotation, and lead escalations, incident reviews and remediation; lead readiness for seasonal peaks.
- Build trusted relationships with Product, Experience Design, Operations, Supply Chain and other engineering teams, and partner with carriers and delivery-management and routing vendors on integrations, SLAs and issue resolution.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and senior leaders, and translate organizational strategy into tactical team goals and portfolio roadmaps.
Minimum Requirements:
- 5 or more years of relevant professional experience with a bachelor's degree, or equivalent relevant professional experience
- 1 or more years of experience managing and leading engineering teams
- Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proven ability to lead multiple engineering teams and develop managers and technical leads
- Experience hiring, onboarding, performance managing and retaining engineers, including through transitions and backfills
- Strong influencing and communication skills; partners with Product and senior stakeholders to set direction and priorities
- Solves highly complex problems and manages trade-offs across teams
- Commitment to inclusion, Best Buy's values and "The Way We Lead" behaviors
- Strong solution architecture and design skills for distributed, event-driven microservice systems
- Hands-on Java and Spring Boot, REST APIs, and working knowledge of .NET services and their modernization
- Event streaming and messaging (ideally Kafka with Avro or similar), including retry, dead-letter and idempotency patterns
- Cloud and container platforms (AWS, Kubernetes/EKS, OpenShift), CI/CD and infrastructure automation
- Observability and reliability engineering: metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, incident management and root-cause practices
- Relational and NoSQL data stores; data and analytics platforms (for example BigQuery on GCP)
- Integration with third-party SaaS and vendor platforms via APIs, webhooks and event feeds
- Agile delivery experience, including delivery metrics and tools such as Jira
Preferred Requirements:
- 7 or more years of relevant professional experience
- Logistics, last-mile delivery, field services, scheduling, routing and optimization, or workforce management experience
- Mobile and web front-end experience (for example React Native, micro-frontends)
- Experience running tier-1 systems through seasonal peaks
- Experience with AI-assisted engineering practices and tooling
