Project Overview:

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. Bechtel will design and build Phase 1 of the Ohio One project, a total of 2.5 million square feet, including 600,000 square feet of cleanrooms. Construction will require as much steel as eight Eiffel Towers and as much concrete as the tallest skyscrapers.

Bechtel will strengthen future economic development in the region by partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline.

Job Summary:

The Piping Field Engineer - Testing is responsible for planning, preparing, executing, and documenting pressure tests for an assigned area or group of systems on the project. Reporting to the Lead Pipe Testing Field Engineer, you will independently manage test packages from development through sign-off for hydrostatic, pneumatic, and service/leak tests on piping, tubing, and components.

The successful applicant will coordinate with piping superintendents, direct hire craft, subcontractors, Quality Control, the Authorized Inspector, and construction turnover personnel to ensure testing is performed safely and in accordance with applicable codes, project specifications, and Standard Work Process Procedures, and that tested systems are restored, dried, and turned over in support of mechanical completion.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Independently develop pressure test packages for assigned systems, including test boundaries, marked-up isometrics and P&IDs, test pressures and media, line lists, weld and NDE status, and required inspection hold points.
  • Review test packages prepared by other field engineers and subcontractors for completeness and accuracy before submittal to the Lead Pipe Testing Field Engineer.
  • Plan and sequence tests for the assigned area in alignment with system turnover boundaries and the construction and mechanical completion schedules.
  • Prepare stored energy and exclusion zone calculations for pneumatic tests and obtain the required approvals before testing proceeds.
  • Lead test package readiness walkdowns with craft and Quality Control to confirm completion of welding, NDE, PWHT, supports, and punch items.
  • Execute hydrostatic, pneumatic, sensitive leak, and service tests in accordance with SWPP 4MP-T81-03506, Pressure Testing of Piping, Tubing and Components, project specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Specify and coordinate test equipment, including test pumps, gauges and recorders with current calibration, relief devices, blinds, temporary spools, and test manifolds.
  • Coordinate test water sourcing, quality, and disposal, and post-test draining, drying, flushing, and cleaning to prevent corrosion and MIC.
  • Coordinate test witnessing and sign-off with Quality Control, the Authorized Inspector, and the client, and resolve test failures, leaks, and repairs with craft and engineering.
  • Verify removal of temporary test materials, reinstatement of instruments, valves, and in-line components, and restoration of systems to design configuration.
  • Maintain test records and status tracking for the assigned area, and provide progress, forecasts, and quantities to the Lead Pipe Testing Field Engineer and project controls.
  • Monitor subcontractor and direct-hire testing activities for compliance with approved procedures, drawings, specifications, quality requirements, and project safety standards.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and on-the-job training to junior pipe testing field engineers.
  • Complete training requirements assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university and 5-8 years of relevant experience, including pressure testing of piping systems; or 9-12 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Basic Qualifications

  • Intermediate to proficient understanding of mechanical piping systems, connections, and components.
  • Ability to read and interpret isometrics, P&IDs, orthographics, line lists, piping specifications, and other design drawings.
  • Working knowledge of the pressure testing requirements of ASME B31.3, and familiarity with ASME B31.1, ASME B31.9, and ASME PCC-2.
  • Knowledge of hydrostatic and pneumatic test practices, including stored energy calculations, exclusion zones, and test safety requirements.
  • Understanding of applicable Bechtel work processes, including Standard Work Process Procedures and the Bechtel Core Processes related to the area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) Handbook and Bechtel's "Zero Accidents" safety program.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving ability.
  • Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces, and working in small or confined spaces.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with completions management systems and system turnover processes.
  • Familiarity with Bechtel Standard Applications (BSAPs), including ACONEX, TEAMWorks, Bechtel Productivity System, PTR, eSub, and other automation tools used on Bechtel projects.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractor testing activities.
