Job Description
About the role Avery Dennison is seeking a highly creative, scientifically rigorous Senior Materials Scientist to augment the understanding and development of silicone and non-silicone based release systems, acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives, and other materials technologies critical to our pressure sensitive and functional laminate platforms. In this role, you will work at the intersection of polymer chemistry, physics, interface science, and AI/ML-enabled materials development to advance our scientific understanding. You will be instrumental in transforming how we develop materials in R&D to accelerate our innovation trajectories and translate scientific concepts into actionable, practical technology solutions for our global manufacturing footprint.
Key Responsibilities
- On-site
- Drive fundamental understanding and insights of complex materials and phenomena, including silicone and non-silicone release coatings, polymeric adhesives, gels, colloids, and multi-layer laminates.
- Conceive and develop new material paradigms and translate fundamental scientific understanding into practical, scalable materials, process solutions, and differentiated products.
- Identify and drive appropriate experimentation and/or modeling approaches to construct sound scientific structure-property-process-performance fundamentals.
- Work with cross-functional teams to translate concepts to reality and construct careful experiments to prove or disprove hypotheses by blending scientifically driven experimentation with predictive computational insights.
- Establish the scientific and experimental foundation for autonomous self-driving laboratory capabilities by connecting automated high-throughput experimentation, scientific databases, predictive models, and human scientific judgement.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- PhD in Polymer or Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a closely-related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of direct industrial R&D experience in developing novel materials paradigms with demonstrated expertise in polymer science, coatings, or related fields.
- Strong ability to connect materials structure, formulation, processing, properties and performance through rigorous scientific reasoning and independent experimentation.
- Prior experience with the use of automated high-throughput experimentation, robotics, self-driving autonomous laboratory concepts, or developing model-ready scientific databases is highly desirable.
- Industrial R&D experience with silicone release coatings, release liners, silicone formulations or related technologies is highly preferred.
