Job Description

We are looking for a hands-on Senior OCT Test and Verification Engineer to own the verification chain of our OCT modules, from integrated photonic chips to the packaged module. You will translate system specifications into verification plans, validated test methods, and reports that meet medical device design control requirements, and build the OCT characterization and data-driven build processes that deliver consistent performance.

This is a technical leadership role on a small team. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will bring medical device verification rigor to the team, partner with our electrical engineering team and external packaging vendors, and train junior engineers in design control test practice. It is well-suited to someone who has taken OCT products through design verification toward production and enjoys being both the expert at the bench and the person who builds the methods others use.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Translate system specifications into verification plans, protocols, and reports under design controls

Develop and validate test methods, including gauge R&R, for OCT performance metrics such as sensitivity, roll-off, axial resolution, dispersion, and imaging range

Establish traceability from requirements to verification evidence in the design history file (DHF)

Lead OCT characterization of integrated photonic devices, test structures, and packaged modules, including sensitivity, roll-off, and imaging performance

Implement process controls that ensure consistent module performance: standardized test documentation, measurements at each assembly step, and controlled test records.

Design and run experiments to identify what drives imaging sensitivity, such as LO power, wavelength and polarization dependence of on-chip splitters, and PD integration.

Develop standardized test procedures, data formats, and automated test sequences (Python or similar) that enable high-throughput testing.

Train junior engineers to execute validated test methods and maintain controlled documentation

Partner with external packaging vendors through design for manufacturing (DFM) and process transfer as we move toward customer samples and pilot production.

Work with analog and RF engineers to separate optical from electronic noise sources in the full receiver chain.

Feed test and packaging data back into architecture and design decisions and represent test and verification during design reviews and customer technical engagements.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

M.S. or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or a B.S. with equivalent industry experience

5+ years developing OCT products, including taking an OCT system or subsystem through design verification toward release

Medical device verification experience under ISO 13485 and FDA design controls, including test method validation, verification protocols and reports, and requirements traceability

Hands-on characterization of swept-source OCT systems (spectral-domain also valued), including sensitivity, roll-off, resolution, dispersion, and artifact analysis

Experience with balanced detection, interferometric measurement, or coherent receivers, including a working understanding of noise sources such as shot noise, RIN, and common-mode noise

Track record of data-driven process development, including designing experiments and improving yield or reproducibility

Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis

Clear written documentation and the ability to teach methods to others

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Optical and optoelectronic testing of photonic integrated circuits

Hands-on packaging of silicon photonics, silicon nitride, or planar lightwave circuit (PLC) devices, including edge coupling, fiber arrays, active alignment, die attach, and UV or thermal adhesive processes

Working with external packaging houses on DFM and transfer to pilot or volume production

Familiarity with photodetector front ends (bias networks, TIAs) and debugging mixed optical-electronic systems

Familiarity with ISO 14971 risk management and IEC 60825-1 and IEC 60601-1 requirements

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Primarily lab-based; requires extended periods of work at optical benches and test stations

May involve handling of laser sources (Class 3R/3B); laser safety training provided or required

Occasional travel to vendors or customers

Occasional lifting of equipment up to 30lbs

Place of Work

On-site
