As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll own the technical health of multiple systems, lead large projects independently with or without an assigned business analyst, and build the hardest solutions, setting the engineering standards that keep software reliable, secure, and cost-effective across the team. You also lead complex incident resolutions, set the example for agent-directed development, own a piece of the team’s shared context, and mentor engineers across levels. You’ll use approved AI tools routinely for suitable work and own the quality, security, and correctness of the results. You’ll bring professional judgment which includes choosing when to use AI, checking its output, and using another method when appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

25% Own the technical health of multiple systems, which includes:

  • Serving as design authority for assigned applications, platforms, and systems, deciding system components, design patterns, performance, reliability, and implementation approach, and guiding design decisions on changes made to them;
  • Planning the technical direction of each system for current delivery and its near-term roadmap, managing technical debt, performance, and reliability across them, and keeping the systems maintainable, secure, stable, and fit for purpose; and
  • Documenting design decisions and implementation guidance at a level of detail that guides development, and participating frequently in solution design, reviews, and troubleshooting throughout delivery.

20% Lead large projects and build the hardest solutions, which includes:

  • Leading large projects independently from intake through specification, design, build, UAT, and rollout, with or without an assigned business analyst, partnering with the analyst when one is assigned, and managing scope, cost, and schedule for on-time delivery within demonstrated capacity, raising tradeoffs early;
  • Writing stories and acceptance criteria and confirming them and the completed work directly with business users and stakeholders;
  • Directing AI agents to build and harden complex services, multi-agent workflows, and integrations from proof of concept to production, leading the hardest changes, and writing code by hand where the task, platform, or quality calls for it; and
  • Integrating data from back-end services and databases, and maintaining, expanding, and scaling enterprise-level software.

15% Set engineering standards and own shared context, which includes:

  • Setting team standards for testing and verification, evaluations, guardrails, observability, security, performance and cost, and CI/CD promotion, within the department standards the Software Solution Architect publishes;
  • Owning a piece of the team’s shared context, such as repository instruction files, skills, and the review checklist, establishing specifications, templates, and context practices that improve work across the team, and keeping them current so others can rely on them; and
  • Designing reusable agent workflows for larger work, leading orchestration, and multi-agent design only where it adds value, and setting the example for agent-directed development on the team.

15% Lead risk-based quality and review, which includes:

  • Leading verification of AI-generated changes on the team by establishing verification strategies and review practices and identifying recurring failure modes, establishing review coverage for AI solution code, and personally reviewing the highest-risk changes;
  • Writing unit and integration tests and evaluations, and verifying agent-produced changes with tests, debugging, and review appropriate to their risk before release; and
  • Creating and maintaining software documentation for the systems.

10% Operate the systems, which includes:

  • Promoting changes through CI/CD release pipelines (dev, test, stage, and production) and following them through to production and real use; and
  • Taking on-call shifts, monitoring the systems, and improving alerting and recovery, serving as the on-call escalation point, leading resolution of complex production incidents, and following up on root causes.

10% Mentor and coach engineers across levels and IT, which includes:

  • Assisting at least two teammates in AI fluency, with evidence in their portfolios;
  • Mentoring engineers across levels and across IT, and teaching others how to delegate effectively to agents; and
  • Partnering with the Software Solution Architects on system and platform patterns, sharing the systems’ design context and patterns so teammates and agents can work effectively in them, and turning proven patterns into shared practice across the combined team.

5% Collaborate and grow, which includes:

  • Partnering with other engineers, business systems analysts, product owners, project managers, operations, and business leaders, estimating and logging time daily, providing project status information to management and end users, and presenting demonstrations of project functionality; and
  • Maintaining skills through ongoing training and study, including AI fluency courses, and evaluating emerging trends and AI capabilities for fit with the systems’ roadmaps.

The list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be substituted, as necessary.

HOW WE WANT TO WORK

We build to learn. When a user suggests a change, we put a working version in front of them in hours, generate the requirements from what we built, let users react, and then harden the same work through dev, test, stage, and production. People who thrive here:

  • Act and decide – Make reversible calls immediately and time-box the rest to hours or days, not weeks. Own the decision and keep stakeholders informed. Slow down deliberately for one-way doors: production data changes, real customer or agent communications, money movement, compliance positions, and security boundaries.
  • Show, don’t tell – Bring a working example to the conversation instead of a slide or a specification.
  • Hold work loosely – Treat a proof of concept as a question for users. Rework or discard it without attachment when they react.
  • Own the outcome – Follow a change through to production and real use, watch monitoring and audit logs, and fix what breaks.
  • Leave a trail – Keep generated requirements, decision notes, tests, and agent context files current so the next person or agent can pick up the work.

These standards apply to all roles. Associates are expected to demonstrate them within the scope of their position, with the level of independence, decision-making authority, and guidance appropriate for their role.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Required capabilities

  • Typically 6 or more years of professional software development experience, including leading an initiative end to end and serving as the recognized go-to engineer for a system.
  • A sustained portfolio of systems shipped iteratively with AI agents, including reusable workflows, specifications, and verification practices that others on the team use, with sound judgment in verifying the output. The interview includes a live build exercise.
  • Experience owning the design and technical health of production systems, including design patterns, performance, reliability, security, and production monitoring.
  • Experience leading large projects end to end, including planning scope, cost, and schedule, with or without an assigned business analyst, and working directly with business users and stakeholders.
  • Deep experience with relational database systems (such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL), object-oriented programming, and web application development, and experience with document or graph data.
  • Experience building interfaces using modern HTML/CSS and building functional solutions using more than one of the following: Vue, Angular, JavaScript, C#, TypeScript, Python, .NET MVC, Entity Framework, or REST APIs.
  • Ability to design and implement unit and integration tests and to lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex production issues with modern IDEs, preferably Visual Studio; experience with modern source control and CI/CD release pipelines, preferably Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, and Git; and experience with Linux and container operations, Agile processes, and modern data formats, preferably JSON and XML.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching engineers across experience levels, and the ability to make technical decisions quickly and explain tradeoffs.
  • Strong problem diagnosis, troubleshooting, and creative problem-solving skills, professional written and verbal communication with technical and business partners and leaders, and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks within the constraints of timelines and budgets, with business acumen.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced remote team environment and to learn rapidly and master diverse technologies and techniques.
  • Talent required in values, work intensity, achiever, positivity, resourcefulness, command, relationship-extension, and exactness.

Preferred experience

  • Claude Code or similar agentic tools; hands-on model API integration, context and retrieval design, tool use, and evaluation; n8n; MCP.
  • Python/FastAPI; TypeScript, Next.js, and React; PostgreSQL and SQL Server; Kafka or Redpanda event streaming; Neo4j; Podman or Docker; GitHub Actions; Grafana and Prometheus; LDAP/Active Directory; Azure; Azure DevOps or Jira.
  • Insurance or financial services systems and enterprise integration experience.

AI FLUENCY

Directing AI agents is the default way you produce work on this team. You choose another approach when quality, security, or the platform calls for it, and can explain why. You own the correctness, security, and quality of everything you deliver, however it was produced.

  • Delegation – Routinely directs agents on substantial implementation, testing, and documentation work where they suit the task, and designs reusable workflows for larger work, selecting orchestration only when useful. Chooses a sensible division of work, explains significant exceptions, recovers when an agent becomes unproductive, and teaches others how to delegate effectively.
  • Description – Supplies clear intent, context, constraints, and completion criteria, improves them as new information emerges, and keeps repository context files current as the code changes. Establishes specifications, templates, and context practices that demonstrably improve work across the team.
  • Discernment – Verifies agent output by running it, testing it, and reviewing it before release, and explains the result and its limits. Establishes verification strategies and review practices for the team, identifies recurring failure modes, improves the team’s quality of judgment, redirects or stops ineffective work, and owns defects.
  • Diligence – Follows approved tool, data, and access rules independently, protects secrets and sensitive data, records material AI contributions, and raises control gaps promptly.
  • Leverage – Applies repeatable agent workflows to recurring engineering work and shows a credible benefit, including verification and rework.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience. Relevant technical, analysis, cloud, insurance, or leadership certifications are beneficial; demonstrated capability remains central.

PHYSICAL AND WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS

This position is remote, with occasional on-site attendance. Travel arrangements and team collaboration hours are communicated for the specific opening. Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential function. Work may exceed 40 hours a week.

  • On-call rotation – Participates in the Software Development team’s rotating on-call schedule after training, including nights and weekends. While on call, remains reachable and responds promptly to production alerts within defined response times and escalation paths.
  • Contain first – While on call, is empowered to take immediate containing actions, such as rolling back a release, pausing outbound communications, parking workflows, or disabling a feature. Fixes forward during business hours unless impact requires otherwise, and records a brief incident note.
  • Planned off-hours work – Occasional scheduled evening or weekend work for production deploys, cutovers, data migrations, and go-lives, with advance notice.
