Original job description

Step into a career with ASM, where cutting edge technology meets collaborative culture.

For over 55 years ASM has been ahead of what’s next, at the forefront of innovation and what’s technologically possible. With more than 4,500 ASMers representing 70 nationalities, our people and our advanced semiconductor devices are playing a crucial role in trends such as 5G, cloud computing, AI, and autonomous driving. But we’re more than just a tech company. We value diversity, inclusion and sustainability as we strive to make a positive impact on the world. Our development programs help support your growth, shaping your future and pushing the boundaries of innovation to unleash potential.

As a Field Service Engineer Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting advanced semiconductor equipment while learning how engineers help customers keep complex manufacturing systems operating safely and reliably.

Based at our customer site in Hillsboro, Oregon, this internship gives you the opportunity to put your engineering education into practice in a high-tech semiconductor manufacturing environment. You’ll work alongside experienced Field Service Engineers, receive hands-on training and mentorship, and contribute to real technical projects and equipment-support activities.

Throughout the internship, you’ll gain exposure to technologies such as vacuum systems, plasma, chemical delivery, robotics, sensors, advanced metrology, electrical and mechanical systems, and complex hardware-software interactions.

You’ll also have a defined internship project with clear objectives and deliverables, allowing you to apply your technical knowledge to a real engineering challenge. At the conclusion of the internship, you’ll have the opportunity to present your project, results, and key learnings to the team.

What You’ll Be Working On

Work alongside experienced Field Service Engineers to support the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance of semiconductor equipment.
Gain hands-on experience with complex mechanical, electrical, vacuum, robotics, sensor, and control systems.
Assist with troubleshooting equipment issues using structured problem-solving techniques and guidance from experienced engineers.
Participate in equipment inspections, testing, diagnostics, and other engineering support activities.
Learn how engineers use schematics, procedures, technical documentation, equipment data, and diagnostic tools to identify technical issues.
Work in a semiconductor cleanroom environment while following established safety, quality, and customer requirements.
Support continuous improvement projects focused on equipment reliability, serviceability, safety, and efficiency.
Gain exposure to how Field Service Engineers collaborate with customers, process engineers, product teams, and other technical organizations.
Develop technical documentation and summarize findings, observations, and project results.
Complete a defined internship project addressing a real equipment, service, reliability, or engineering challenge.
Participate in team meetings, technical discussions, training, and professional-development opportunities.
Present your internship project and key learnings at the conclusion of the program.

What We’re Looking For

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electromechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
Interest in semiconductor equipment, advanced manufacturing, robotics, automation, or complex electromechanical systems.
Hands-on experience gained through coursework, labs, research, student projects, engineering clubs, previous internships, or personal technical projects.
Basic ability to read and interpret electrical, electronic, or electromechanical schematics.
Strong problem-solving skills and an eagerness to learn how complex systems operate.
Comfortable working in a hands-on, fast-paced technical environment.
Willingness to work in a cleanroom environment and follow established safety procedures.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Curiosity and willingness to ask questions, receive feedback, and learn from experienced engineers.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

What Sets You Apart

You don't need to check every box. Relevant experience can come from coursework, labs, research, student organizations, competitions, personal projects, or previous internships.

Exposure to semiconductor manufacturing or wafer fabrication.
Coursework or projects involving robotics, automation, vacuum technology, electronics, mechanical systems, controls, plasma, or gas-delivery systems.
Experience using basic electrical or mechanical diagnostic and test equipment.
Previous internship, co-op, research, senior design, or hands-on engineering project experience.
Experience developing technical reports, engineering documentation, or project presentations.
Participation in engineering clubs, robotics teams, Formula SAE, IEEE, maker organizations, or similar technical activities.
Interest in data analysis, statistical methods, and structured problem solving.
Previous experience working in a team-oriented or customer-facing environment.
A strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous learning.

What You’ll Gain From the Internship

During the internship, you’ll have the opportunity to:

Apply your engineering education to real semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Gain hands-on experience working with complex electromechanical systems and advanced technology.
Receive mentorship and technical guidance from experienced Field Service Engineers.
Build practical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
Learn how electrical, mechanical, software, controls, robotics, vacuum, and process technologies work together within semiconductor equipment.
Gain exposure to the day-to-day responsibilities of a Field Service Engineer.
Experience working within a semiconductor fab and cleanroom environment.
Develop your technical communication, teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
Build relationships with engineers and other professionals across the organization.
Explore potential career paths in Field Service, Equipment Engineering, Process Engineering, Product Support, Technical Operations, and other engineering functions.
Complete a meaningful technical project that you can discuss as part of your professional experience.
Present your work and accomplishments at the end of the internship.

The Internship Experience

This internship is designed to provide more than observation. You’ll be part of the engineering team and have opportunities to learn, contribute, troubleshoot, collaborate, and solve real technical problems with guidance from experienced engineers.

Your experience will combine:

Hands-on technical learning
Mentorship from experienced engineers
A defined engineering project
Exposure to advanced semiconductor manufacturing
Cross-functional collaboration
Professional and technical skill development
A final project presentation

By the end of the internship, you’ll have a stronger understanding of semiconductor equipment, field engineering, troubleshooting, and the technical disciplines that come together to make advanced semiconductor manufacturing possible.

Why Join ASM?

If you enjoy taking things apart, understanding how complex systems work, solving technical problems, and learning by doing, this internship gives you the opportunity to apply those interests in one of the world’s most advanced technology industries.

At ASM, you’ll gain exposure to the equipment and engineering behind semiconductor manufacturing while learning from experienced professionals in the field. You’ll have an opportunity to build practical engineering skills, strengthen your technical foundation, and explore whether a career in Field Service Engineering and the semiconductor industry is right for you.

Your internship is an opportunity to learn, contribute, build connections, and experience firsthand how engineering helps enable the technology behind AI and other next-generation applications.
