Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

As a Structural BIM Designer, you will play a crucial role in the digital development, coordination, and documentation of structural building projects. Working closely with structural engineers, you will translate engineering calculations, sketches, markups, and design information into accurate, coordinated, and data-rich structural Building Information Models (BIM) and documentation. Your expertise will contribute to the successful delivery of complex projects. This role can be based in our Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, or New Jersey offices.

A Structural BIM Designer helps establish project standards and workflows, maintains model and data quality, and enables the structural teams to produce coordinated drawings and deliverables in accordance with contractual requirements and standard principles.

Take responsibility for assigned structural models and drawing packages, maintaining model health, data quality, documentation consistency, and delivery readiness throughout the project lifecycle.

If you're passionate about pushing the boundaries of design and engineering to create impactful solutions for the built environment, we invite you to join our team and be part of our journey towards shaping a better world.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with structural engineers and BIM designers to develop accurate, data-rich structural BIM models and coordinated structural plans, sections, elevations, details, schedules, and drawing packages derived from engineering calculations, sketches, markups, and design information.
  • Assist with project startup, including model configuration, project origins and shared coordinates, linked models, templates, naming conventions, and information exchange procedures.
  • Review project information requirements and support the implementation and maintenance of BIM execution plans and model production standards for the structural team.
  • Perform model and drawing reviews, visual audits, model health checks, and data validation; document issues, communicate priorities, and track items through resolution.
  • Apply project QC/QA procedures to models and data before formal review or submission.
  • Maintain model performance, content quality, interoperability, and reliable model data across project platforms.
  • Support submission planning by coordinating model and drawing status, required reviews, and delivery readiness with structural project leads.
  • Coordinate with other discipline models within federated environments and work with structural teams to confirm that design information is aligned across disciplines.
  • Support construction-phase model and documentation activities, including incorporating reviewed design changes, maintaining consistency through revisions, and coordinating with contractors or fabricators where required.
  • Participate in BIM kickoff meetings, coordination workshops, and design reviews.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to less experienced BIM team members on agreed workflows, model standards, and documentation practices, and share lessons learned within the structural BIM team.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction technology, architecture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of technical certification and practical industry experience.
  • 4+ years of experience working in the building design/construction industry.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and coordinating structural BIM models and complete construction-documentation packages for multidisciplinary building or infrastructure projects through multiple design stages.
  • Must not require sponsorship, now or in the future, to be considered for this role

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in Autodesk Revit for structural modelling and documentation is required. Experience with Tekla Structures is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience of assembling a complete structural drawing set.
  • Knowledge of structural systems, documentation methodology, detailing, and constructability across reinforced concrete and structural steel. Experience with timber structures is preferred.
  • Experience with other recognized modelling software such as Rhino, Solidworks, Civil 3D, MicroStation, AutoCAD, or similar is preferred.
  • Interest or experience in applying automation and computational workflows using Dynamo, Grasshopper, Python, C#, APIs, or comparable tools is preferred, including the ability to identify repetitive activities that may benefit from automation.
  • Interest in, and willingness to responsibly adopt, emerging digital technologies including AI-assisted workflows to improve productivity, model and data quality, knowledge retrieval, and project delivery. Ability to critically review and validate outputs from automation and AI-enabled tools before incorporating them into project deliverables.
  • Experience with coordination and review platforms such as Revizto, Solibri, Navisworks, and Autodesk Forma.
  • Understanding of common data environment workflows, including permissions, folder structures, information exchange, and record retention.
  • Ability to review model and drawing information for consistency, completeness, coordination, compliance, and readiness for issue.
  • Competence with Microsoft Excel and other data-management or reporting tools used to review and communicate project information.
  • Knowledge of interoperability, openBIM and data-exchange workflows, including IFC exchange, BCF-based coordination, content libraries, and standardized templates, is preferred.

Core Competencies

  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical issues to internal and external project teams.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage model information, priorities, and deliverables across multiple teams and projects.
  • Collaborative approach and proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and geographically distributed teams.
  • Proactive problem-solving and sound judgment when resolving issues.
  • Ability to work independently within an agreed scope while recognizing when escalation or specialist support is required.
  • Commitment to quality, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and the responsible adoption of new digital technologies.
  • Ability to support deadlines and changing project demands while maintaining accurate, reliable, and well-coordinated deliverables.
