Job Description

The Pathology Assistant assists in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens while adhering to section guidelines and utilizing voice recognition systems for effective documentation.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
• Under the supervision of a pathologist, describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination.
• Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling of surgical pathology specimens.
• Obtain case history, laboratory data, and necessary imaging from clinical records as needed.
• Assist in coding gross specimens during the gross description process.
• Organize and coordinate anatomic pathology grossing for all specimens at both grossing tables.
• Update and utilize Voice Recognition templates, ensuring back-up dictation systems are aligned.
• Troubleshoot Voice Recognition issues as they arise.
• Assist pathologists with the preparation, staining, and cover slipping of frozen section samples.
• Manage inventory of gross room supplies and demonstrate safe laboratory techniques.
• Prepare specimens for histology and assist in post mortem examinations as necessary.
• Download cassettes from the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and enter required data accurately.
• Maintain effective communication with pathologists and histology laboratory staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Experience

A B.S. Degree in Biology or a related science along with certification from a Pathologist Assistant Program or equivalent experience is required, with a minimum of 2 years preferred.

Certifications / Licensure

A New York State license is required for this position. ASCP certification is preferred.
