Original job description
Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Junior Modeling and Simulation Engineer/Scientist who will support our growing business in theory-driven modeling and simulation of complex systems. As a member of our diverse, multidisciplinary team, you will support the development of computational models, simulations, and analysis tools that strengthen our national security. The successful candidate will have a degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field and a strong interest in modeling, simulation, and/or software development.
The systems modeling, analysis, and research technology group develops modeling and simulation software and other tools to support analysis of military systems, including weapons systems, communications systems, and other systems that support national defense. We develop models and conduct simulations over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales using a variety of approaches to support customer objectives. As a member of the team, you will apply your software development and/or engineering/science skills daily to develop creative solutions to challenging problems.
We are a research team, and the application and nature of our work can vary. You will be continuously challenged to learn and grow expertise in new areas. The most successful candidate will have a strong technical background in science, engineering, applied physics, computer science, or mathematics and a desire to continue expanding their knowledge. Experience (and desire!) in writing robust and performant software is also highly desirable. If this describes you, please apply!
If offered this position, you will be an occasional employee, which is an hourly, non-exempt position. As an occasional employee, you are not benefits eligible and hours worked are dependent on the level of support needed. Hours of support needed will be determined by supervisor and/or project manager. For the Arlington office, we are relocating to the Alexandria, VA area in early 2027.
Salary Range: $72K - $121K
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work closely with multidisciplinary science and engineering teams to develop innovative approaches in representing the structure and behavior of systems.
- Review literature and report findings to support collaborative solution development.
- Present candidate solutions to colleagues and adjust designs based on feedback.
- Contribute to the development of technical reports and other modes of communication of technical work.
- Occasionally work independently to learn about various classes of military systems to support model development.
Position Requirements:
The nature of work requires the eligibility to apply for and hold a US security clearance. Selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements at the time of employment. You are a qualified candidate if you have the following.
- A BS or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics.
- 0-2 years of relevant work experience.
- U.S. Citizenship Required with the ability to obtain a clearance.
- Experience writing code and developing software.
- A strong interest in solving complex challenges.
Position Preferred Qualifications:
Above all, we value passion, a continuous desire to learn, and teamwork. We are confident that if you possess the right attitude, work ethic, and skill set, you will succeed in the role. In addition to the experience and skills above, if you have any of the following, you will be able to accelerate your effectiveness and impact.
- A graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics.
- A desire to work in a dynamic team environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence, systems science, systems theory, and/or modeling and simulation theory.
- Familiarity with software architecture, algorithms, data structures, design patterns, API design, and/or test-driven development.
