Original job description
Summary Do you want to help build some of the largest and most consequential enterprise and customer technology systems in the world? Join Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization. IS&T is the engine behind everything Apple does for customers and for the people who build for them. It’s Apple’s central nervous system. Supporting 2.5 billion active Apple devices, processing billions of secure transactions, and keeping the technology that defines modern life running flawlessly, IS&T makes the impossible feel effortless.
Do you love building solutions to handle global complexity and immense scale? Imagine what you could do here.
Retail and Marcom Engineering, an IS&T team, builds and operates the systems and experiences that connect Apple's products with its customers. The team owns the technology behind both Apple's online and physical stores and drives the interactive marketing experiences and tools that keep creative operations moving. Together, those functions deliver the technology behind every product story Apple tells and every purchase a customer makes.
Description This is a hands-on engineering role, and it's full-stack in the truest sense.
You'll build features in the macOS app, written in Swift and SwiftUI, and in the React framework that powers our plugins. Plugins are web-based and render live inside the app, so you'll move between native and web UI regularly.
You'll also build and run the cloud services behind the app: the APIs, data and real-time infrastructure every document depends on. We'd like you to be as comfortable designing a schema or chasing down a slow query as you are refining an animation.
Collaboration runs through everything. Your job is to make it disappear for the people using it: edits that appear instantly, undo that does what you expect in a shared document, and a screen that stays calm when a teammate's change lands. There's plenty of deep engineering underneath, and you'll be part of it.
Experience with real-time collaboration is valuable, but curiosity matters more.
You'll work directly with the people who use the app, learn from how how they work, and build tools that feel intuitive.
Responsibilities
Build features for a native macOS app in Swift and SwiftUI, with care for interaction and polish Make real-time editing feel instant and predictable for everyone in a document Develop the React framework and component libraries that other Apple engineers use to build collaborative plugins Build and operate the cloud services behind the app, from API design to data modeling and performance (Swift, Kotlin, Node, Postgres, WebSockets) Work with designers and creative teams to understand how they work, and shape the tools around it Design APIs, in the app, the framework and the backend, that other engineers enjoy building on Help teams building plugins, from first prototype to production
Minimum Qualifications 5 years of software engineering experience, building both user interfaces and the services behind them Shipped user-facing software, either native (SwiftUI, AppKit or UIKit) or web (React) Experience building backend services, including API design and relational databases Proficiency in at least two: Swift, TypeScript or Kotlin BS in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent job-related experience
Preferred Qualifications Experience with both SwiftUI and React Experience with Kotlin and Spring Boot, or server-side Swift (Vapor) Experience building real-time collaborative or local-first apps, such as CRDTs, operational transforms or sync engines Experience building creative or authoring tools, such as design tools, WYSIWYG editors, visual page builders or content management systems Experience building component libraries, design systems, or APIs that other engineers build on Experience integrating LLM-assisted features into user-facing apps You thrive in a creative-led culture and enjoy spending time with the people who use what you build
