Original job description
Summary Siri is used by people all over the world, in their own languages on billions of Apple devices. Global Siri makes that possible, working across engineering teams to bring Siri and the Apple Intelligence experiences built around it to users in every supported language and region.
This is a pivotal moment. Siri is evolving from a voice assistant into a deeply personal, agentic AI that understands your personal context, reasons on what's on your screen, and takes action across your apps, all built on Apple's foundation of privacy. Bringing that experience to every language and every culture is one of the hardest and most consequential problems in applied AI today: it requires close integration across large language models, speech technologies, multimodal understanding, agentic evaluation, and the large-scale data and platform systems that tie them together.
We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a multi-team AI engineering organization, at the intersection of feature development, engineering architecture, and global language readiness. You'll define the strategy and execution for how Siri's next-generation intelligence reaches international users, set the technical direction, grow an exceptional group of managers and engineers, and partner with global regional teams to bring these experiences to users worldwide. If you want deep technical challenges, global product impact, and the satisfaction of seeing your work reach people in their own language across the world, this is the right role.
Description As Senior Engineering Manager for Global Siri, you will lead a group of engineering and machine learning teams, responsible for internationalization architecture, cross-functional integration, and engineering readiness of next-generation Siri and Apple Intelligence features. You'll be accountable for end-to-end outcomes: from defining the technical strategy and scalable ML architecture, through model development, data, and evaluation, to shipping production systems that run on-device and in Apple's Private Cloud Compute.
Your organization's scope will cover the full stack of international language technologies including:
- Language understanding and LLMs: establish multilingual and locale-specific scaling technologies. Work with foundation model and features teams on architecture, model behavior, adaptation, evaluation of intentional experiences, reasoning, and generation, including personal context and on-screen awareness.
- Speech and multimodal input: automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS), speaker understanding, and fusion of voice, vision, and text input across languages, accents, and dialects.
- Agentic capabilities: ensuring Siri can reliably take action across apps and services for users worldwide, accounting for regional apps, conventions, and expectations.
- Evaluation and data science: building state-of-the-art multilingual and agentic evaluation that tells us, with rigor, how good Siri is in each market and where to invest next.
- Data and platform: scalable systems for data collection, annotation, synthetic data generation, and language-specific representations and conventions, plus the tooling and pipelines that make launching a new language faster with each release.
You'll partner closely with Siri's Speech, Experience, Platform, and Foundation Model teams, as well as product, design, research, data science, and regional engineering organizations, to turn ambitious goals into shipped products. You'll be a visible leader across Siri and Apple Intelligence, providing regular updates to senior leadership and influencing roadmaps well beyond your own organization.
What you'll do
- Lead and grow a multi-team organization of ML engineers and software engineers, including managing first-line managers and senior technical leaders.
- Set the technical strategy and multi-year engineering plan for bringing Siri and Apple Intelligence capabilities to international markets, and translate it into clear priorities, milestones, and owners.
- Own key decisions on ML architecture and language technologies across Siri products and technologies; shape model and platform requirements through partnership with the teams that own those systems.
- Build scalable, repeatable systems and processes that reduce the cost and time of adding and improving each language, so quality scales with the number of markets rather than against it.
- Establish rigorous, data-driven evaluation for each locale, including agentic and end-to-end evaluation, and use it to guide investment and launch decisions.
- Lead data strategy, including annotation programs, data quality, and the definition of language-specific representations, conventions, and guidelines.
- Partner across Siri and Apple Intelligence, influencing teams throughout the stack so that international is designed in from the start rather than added later.
- Champion modern engineering practices and reusable GenAI-assisted workflows, to accelerate delivery while maintaining high quality and reliability.
- Attract, hire, develop, and retain outstanding talent, and build a team culture of technical excellence, ownership, inclusion, and care.
- Communicate the team’s strategy, engineering decisions, delivery progress, and cross-functional risks clearly to senior leadership and partner organizations.
Minimum Qualifications 10+ years of experience building software and/or machine learning systems, including 5+ years managing engineering teams. Experience managing managers or leading a multi-team organization, with a track record of developing first-line managers and senior engineers. Hands-on technical background in software and/or ML engineering, with depth in at least one of: LLM-based products, language technologies, speech systems, or multimodal AI products. Proven track record of shipping ML-powered products at scale, with a detailed understanding of development, evaluation, integration, and release readiness. Strong leadership, planning, and prioritization skills, with demonstrated ability to deliver complex, cross-functional programs. Excellent written and verbal communication, including presenting to executive leadership and working effectively with people across a wide range of backgrounds and technical depth. B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Linguistics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications M.S. or Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Speech and Language Technologies, Computational Linguistics, or a closely related field. Experience building multilingual or international AI systems, especially across multiple markets, languages, or low-resource settings. Experience developing, training, or fine-tuning LLMs, speech models, or multimodal models, including on-device or efficiency-constrained deployment. Experience with conversational AI, agentic systems, and evaluation of agentic or generative AI products. Strong background in experimental design and data science, with experience building evaluation frameworks that drive product decisions. Demonstrated expertise using AI-assisted software development workflows to accelerate engineering while maintaining code quality. Excellent strategic vision, with the ability to set direction in ambiguous, fast-moving technical areas. Working proficiency in more than one language, or experience collaborating closely with linguists and in-market teams.
