Original job description
Summary Apple Services Engineering (ASE) builds and runs the infrastructure behind Apple's services. ASE DevX (Developer Experience) provides the tools and platforms ASE engineers use to build, test, and ship. Thousands of Apple engineers build, test, and ship services with Bazel, and they run it through our toolchain: bazel wrapper CLI, our Bazel Central Registry mirror, shared rulesets, and a remote build execution (RBE) platform that runs their actions at scale. The Bazel team builds and operates that toolchain. We make builds fast, hermetic, and reproducible, and we help large codebases move onto Bazel and stay there.
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead this team. You'll own the roadmap for Apple's Bazel ecosystem and RBE platform, and you'll grow a team of engineers whose work directly sets how fast other teams can ship. You'll also represent Apple in the open-source Bazel community.
Description As the Engineering Manager for the Bazel team, you will be responsible for:
- Platform strategy: Own the vision and multi-quarter roadmap for Bazel at Apple. That includes the developer toolchain (bazelw, rules, toolchains, IDE integration), the module ecosystem (Bzlmod, the registry, shared modules), and the remote execution and caching platform.
- Remote build execution at scale: Drive the scaling, reliability, and cost efficiency of RBE. That includes expanding execution platforms (such as macOS execution), custom base images, capacity planning, and SLOs for availability and build performance.
- Migrations and customer adoption: Partner with product engineering organizations to move large, complex codebases onto Bazel. Balance hands-on expertise and tooling from our team with migration work owned by customer teams, and measure success by build time, reliability, and developer satisfaction.
- Supply chain and compliance: Make sure builds meet Apple's security and compliance requirements, such as SBOM generation, provenance, and hermetic dependency management. Do this through platform defaults, not per-team effort.
- Developer experience: Invest in the tools developers touch every day: build UIs and observability, failure triage, local and CI parity, and AI-assisted workflows for build maintenance and migration.
- Open source: Contribute upstream to Bazel and its rule ecosystem where it serves Apple, and build relationships with the maintainers and the wider community.
- People leadership: Hire, mentor, and grow a team of senior and staff engineers. Run a sustainable support and on-call model. Build a culture of technical rigor, ownership, and customer empathy.
- Cross-functional influence: Align priorities with partner infrastructure teams (CI, compute, artifact management, security). Communicate trade-offs and status to senior leadership. Make the case for investment based on measured impact.
Responsibilities
- 8+ years of software engineering experience in build systems, developer tooling, infrastructure, or distributed systems
- 3+ years of engineering management experience, including managing senior engineers and running hiring, performance, and career development
- Hands-on experience with a modern build system at scale (Bazel, Buck2, Pants, or equivalent), including how dependency graphs, action caching, and remote execution behave
- Track record of delivering large, multi-quarter infrastructure projects across team boundaries, from scoping and sequencing through delivery and operation
- Experience operating production services using SLOs, metrics, and telemetry to drive reliability and performance decisions
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to influence engineers and senior leadership
- BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

- Deep Bazel expertise: Starlark rules and providers, toolchains and platforms, transitions, Bzlmod, and the Remote Execution API
- Experience building or operating remote execution and caching systems (Buildbarn, BuildBuddy, EngFlow, Buildfarm, or in-house)
- Experience leading large codebase migrations onto a new build system and driving organizational adoption of an internal platform
- Familiarity with Apple platform toolchains (Xcode, Swift, Clang, SDKs, code signing) and macOS execution environments
- Experience with Kubernetes, containers, and large-scale compute or batch scheduling
- Knowledge of software supply chain security: SBOMs, provenance, reproducible builds
