Original job description
The Senior Software Engineer designs, builds, maintains, and owns the architecture of an in-house AI and Google Cloud-based SaaS product that helps staff find information quickly, automate routine work, and make better use of organizational data - including AI-assisted video review, documentation support, and search over internal records. This is a senior, hands-on individual-contributor role that sets technical direction across the full stack - a TypeScript/React front end, a Node.js/Express backend, a Python AI service, and the Google Cloud infrastructure that runs it. The Senior Software Engineer owns key architecture and security decisions, mentors other engineers, and partners directly with leadership to turn strategy into working software, all within the security and privacy practices required of a HIPAA-regulated healthcare environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Contribute to the ownership of the platform and assist in making the core technical decisions that directly impact cloud topology, data model, and AI/LLM approach.
· Design, build, and maintain features end to end, from backend services and APIs to user-facing tools.
· Develop and improve AI workflows on Google Cloud and Vertex AI, including prompt design, retrieval, and evaluation.
· Model and evolve the data layer in PostgreSQL and integrate the platform with existing systems and data sources.
· Package and deploy services as containers to Cloud Run, working with supporting Google Cloud services (Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Artifact Registry).
· Impact security and privacy architecture decisions for a product handling protected health information (PHI).
· Monitor and improve performance, reliability, and cloud costs while working closely with other Software Engineer(s) and Cloud Engineer(s).
· Perform code reviews and establish engineering standards and patterns.
· Write clear documentation and share knowledge across the team.
· Take ownership of projects from scoping through delivery, often working independently.
SKILLS:
· Expert TypeScript/JavaScript and Python skills for full-stack and AI/service development.
· Proficiency with React (front end) and Node.js/Express (backend/APIs).
· Strong SQL skills, including schema design and performant queries against operational data (PostgreSQL; ORMs such as Drizzle a plus).
· Experience architecting and operating containerized applications on Google Cloud (Cloud Run, Artifact Registry, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage).
· Experience designing and shipping LLM/AI features (Vertex AI / Gemini; OpenAI).
· Ability to speak, read and write English sufficiently to perform the job.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
· 6-8+ years of professional software development experience, including ownership of production systems end to end.
· Deep proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and Python.
· Proven experience architecting and building full-stack web applications - a modern front-end framework (e.g., React) and a server-side runtime (e.g., Node.js/Express).
· Strong experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL), REST APIs, and version control (Git).
· Hands-on experience architecting, building, and deploying applications on a cloud platform, ideally Google Cloud (Cloud Run or a comparable container service), including cost-aware design.
· Demonstrated experience building and shipping AI and large language model applications in production.
· Ability to lead ambiguous problems from definition through delivery, and to make sound build-vs-buy and architecture trade-offs independently.
· Experience mentoring engineers, performing code review, and setting engineering standards (testing, CI/CD, documentation).
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including representing technical direction to non-technical leadership.
· A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
· Authorized to work in the United States.
· Must be 18 years of age or older.
