Original job description

Description

Are you passionate about building software that operates at massive scale and directly impacts millions of customers? As a Software Development Engineer II at Amazon, you will design, build, and deliver features that solve real problems and create meaningful value. You will own your work end-to-end - from understanding customer needs through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operations. This role offers the opportunity to tackle complex technical challenges, collaborate with talented engineers, and shape the systems that power Amazon's products and services. If you are a creative problem-solver who thrives on turning ambiguity into clean, maintainable solutions, we want to hear from you.

Key job responsibilities

Design and implement software solutions across the full development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, system design, coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing operations.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand customer and business needs, translating them into well-architected technical solutions that balance scalability, performance, and maintainability.
Mentor and coach fellow engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions, raising the overall quality bar for your team's software.
Identify and resolve root causes of operational issues, driving permanent fixes and continuously improving system reliability and team processes.
Evaluate and integrate modern tools and approaches - including generative AI capabilities - to improve development productivity, code quality, and the overall customer experience.

A day in the life

You start your morning reviewing a pull request from a teammate, providing feedback that strengthens both the code and the engineer behind it. Mid-morning, you join a design review where you present your approach for a new feature, fielding questions and refining your plan with input from peers. After lunch, you dive into implementation, writing clean and well-tested code. Later, you investigate an operational metric that looks off, trace it to a configuration issue, and ship a fix before end of day.

About the team

Our team is focused on building reliable, scalable software that customers depend on every day. We value collaboration, thoughtful engineering, and a commitment to getting the details right. We invest in each other's growth through mentorship, inclusive discussions, and a shared drive to improve. If you are looking for a team where your contributions have visible impact and where you can grow alongside engineers who care deeply about their craft, we would love to have you join us.

Basic Qualifications

3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
Demonstrated experience leveraging generative AI tools to enhance workflow efficiency and productivity, with the ability to craft effective prompts and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs in a professional setting
