Original job description

Application deadline: Nov 11, 2026

The Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC), AWS Commerce Platform team is hiring a cleared Systems Development Engineer to join the team. This is an exciting opportunity to use the latest cloud computing technologies to help U.S. Government agencies implement innovative cloud computing solutions and solve technical problems.

In this role, you will join a team of highly talented engineers that build and support Amazon’s billing systems in air-gapped cloud environments as well as services and tooling to improve how we operate these services. This role enables you to deliver impact at scale, and the work you do unlocks the latest in billing and cost management capabilities for all of our US ADC customers.

A successful Systems Development Engineer is focused on building services and tooling that enhance our operational posture and thinks about the impact of their designs on the scalability, availability, and operational readiness of what they create. They operate at the intersection of business problems and technology strategy. They balance constraints and consider the long-term implications of their design decisions.

This position requires that the candidate selected must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance. The position further requires that, after start, the selected candidate obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph or commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.

Key job responsibilities Amazon has a fast-paced environment where we “Work Hard, Have Fun, Make History.” On a “typical” day engineers might deep dive to root cause a customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way, consult with the top engineers at Amazon, or discuss radical new approaches to automate the remediation of operational issues.

You'll be part of a world-class team in a fast-paced environment that has the entrepreneurial feel of a start-up. This is an opportunity to operate and engineer systems on a massive scale and to gain top-notch experience in cloud computing. You'll be surrounded by people who are smart, passionate about cloud computing and our unique customer space, and believe that world class service is critical to customer success. You'll hone your skills in distributed systems troubleshooting, response, measurement, and automation. You will design and build the operational scalability that sustains the platform's rapid growth. You will be able to measure your success by its visible impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of government services for our nation.

A day in the life You influence technical strategy and architectural decisions within the team and with partner teams and make data-driven decisions.

You will use generative AI and agentic services to develop, build, and operate AWS Dedicated Cloud Commerce services that enable customers to leverage capabilities in secure environments. Our engineering teams support services running in GovCloud and isolated regions, creating unique engineering challenges and opportunities for innovation. The team is responsible for diving deep to resolve operational challenges, innovating to automate operational tasks, building solutions for our customers, supporting execution of various security campaigns (blocked software, host patching), and parity programs.

As a Software Development Engineer I you will:

Work cross-functionally to foster a constructive dialogue, harmonize discordant views, and lead the resolution of contentious issues.
Love to code. Whether it's building tools in Java or solving complex system problems in Python, the ideal candidate will love using technology to solve problems.
Think Big. The ideal candidate will build and deploy solutions across thousands of devices. You will strive to improve and streamline processes to allow for work on a massive scale.

Ongoing events and learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon conferences, inspire us to never stop embracing our uniqueness.
