Original job description

Are you passionate about building and improving the systems that power some of the world's most impactful technology? As a System Development Engineer II at Amazon, you will own the engineering and operational health of critical systems, driving improvements that make them more resilient, cost-effective, and easier to maintain. You will tackle complex problems where the business need is clear but the path forward requires your creativity and technical judgment. From diagnosing thorny production issues to designing automation that eliminates toil, your work will directly improve the experience for both your team and our customers. If you thrive on solving real problems, writing clean and maintainable code, and leaving systems better than you found them, we want to hear from you.

Key job responsibilities

Design and deliver technology solutions that improve system resilience, performance, and maintainability, balancing tradeoffs across scalability, security, and cost.
Identify and resolve complex operational issues through thorough root cause analysis, implementing permanent fixes that prevent recurrence and reduce support burden.
Build automation and tooling that streamline repetitive processes, improve deployment confidence, and increase your team's agility and velocity.
Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and post-incident analyses, providing constructive feedback and coaching peers on engineering and operational best practices.
Collaborate with partner teams to assess system dependencies, clarify architectural responsibilities, and apply improvements that benefit the broader organization.

A day in the life You start your day reviewing system health dashboards and metrics you helped build, quickly identifying any anomalies worth investigating. You might spend the morning pairing with a teammate on a code review, then shift to designing an automation solution that eliminates a recurring manual process. Afternoons could involve a post-incident review where you help the team uncover contributing causes and propose long-term fixes. You regularly connect with engineers on partner teams to align on shared system interfaces and ensure your solutions integrate smoothly.

About the team Our team is focused on building and operating reliable, scalable systems that serve Amazon's customers around the world. We value collaboration, clear communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Every engineer on the team has the opportunity to shape how we build and operate our technology, and we actively invest in mentorship and knowledge sharing. If you are excited about working in an inclusive environment where your ideas matter and your contributions have real impact, we would love for you to join us.

We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating - that’s why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.

AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. Work/Life Balance We value work-life harmony. Achieving success at work should never come at the expense of sacrifices at home, which is why we strive for flexibility as part of our working culture. When we feel supported in the workplace and at home, there’s nothing we can’t achieve in the cloud.

Mentorship and Career Growth We’re continuously raising our performance bar as we strive to become Earth’s Best Employer. That’s why you’ll find endless knowledge-sharing, mentorship and other career-advancing resources here to help you develop into a better-rounded professional.

1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
7+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience

Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby Preferred qualifications
Experience with PowerShell (preferred), Python, Ruby, or Java
