Original job description

Come and join us in building the next-generation invoicing platform for AWS! As one of the foundational utility services within AWS Billing, our services are used by every AWS service and every AWS customer to turn customer usage into invoices. Our team provides a missionary focus on delivering an invoicing system that are trustworthy, future-proof, and stay well ahead of change curve in the cloud economy through high velocity execution.

Billions of dollars worth of invoices are processed through our platform every month, and the timeliness, accuracy, and detail of the data provided by our products heavily influence customer's financial processes. Our domain is in the "sweet spot" as the intersection of business and technical worlds. Our new features tailor to the unique needs of various customer segments and enable AWS's global expansion, while we use native AWS technologies to provide a highly scalable platform to support AWS's growing business. Our organization has a growth culture with an excellent track record of developing and promoting engineering leaders.

We are seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead the AWS Bill Adjustments team. You will own the architecture, development, and operations of the team's software and services; establish its technical standards and engineering practices; and grow engineers across levels. You will balance a steady stream of regulatory-driven country launches against long-term platform investment, keep a demanding live-site operation healthy, and translate technical trade-offs into durable, scalable solutions with measurable business impact. You will partner widely - with product and program management, and with invoicing, marketplace, finance, tax planning, and compliance reporting stakeholders who rely on this team as a source of truth.

Key job responsibilities

Lead and grow the team. Manage, coach, and develop the AWS Bill Adjustments team engineering team. Hire to raise the bar, develop engineers across levels (including growing senior engineers and emerging leads), and manage performance with direct, honest feedback.
Own technical direction. Set the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for the tax engine across determination, calculation, and collection/remittance support. Balance near-term regulatory commitments against the long-term health and maintainability of the platform.
Own operational excellence. Keep business-critical, high-volume services in the billing path healthy - availability, scalability, correctness, auditability, and resilience. Reduce operational load and strengthen operational maturity through better runbooks, automation, and durable fixes.
Deliver the roadmap. Plan and execute across competing demands: country and regime launches, compliance-driven changes, platform and scaling investment, and the team's AI-native initiatives. Make clear prioritization calls and communicate trade-offs to stakeholders and leadership.
Deepen domain ownership. Build and retain deep understanding of the team's tax determination and calculation domain, and invest in reducing single-points-of-knowledge across the team.
Partner across the organization. Work closely with product and program management, partner engineering teams across AWS Invoicing, marketplace, finance, tax planning, and compliance reporting stakeholders to align on requirements, sequencing, and outcomes.
Advance the AI-native direction. Drive agent-first operations and tooling that reduce operational toil and accelerate how the team builds, delivers, and operates.

About the team AWS Bill Adjustments team sits within AWS Invoicing. The team owns the Bill Adjustment services in the billing path - a space that blends deep, constantly changing domain complexity with large-scale distributed systems engineering, and spans AWS business expansion and compliance, customer experience.

The team holds a high bar for operational excellence and works in an AI-native way, while putting real weight on how people work together. It is a collaborative environment that welcomes different perspectives and invests in each other's growth - people share ideas openly, learn from one another, and take ownership of their work, supported by mentorship and room to develop. Basic qualifications

3+ years of engineering team management experience
7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
Experience partnering with product or program management teams Preferred qualifications
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
