Original job description

Security is the #1 concern for customers moving to the cloud, and AWS is dedicated to providing security features our customers need, at scale.

The AWS Identity team owns and operates highly scalable, highly available distributed systems that are used by all AWS customers and internal service teams alike. We are pioneers in areas such as identity, access management, security and providing massively scaled, distributed platform capabilities to all of AWS. We enable our customers to control and secure the most sensitive data on the internet. We are building some of the largest and most complex distributed systems in the world, and we need talented engineering leaders to work with us on this new initiative!

We are reinventing how services support tagging to ensure we deliver on our goal of dramatically simplifying how enterprise customers manage and control access to their AWS resources. We are looking for a talented engineering leader who will be responsible for owning, driving, and evangelizing this space focused on enabling customers to manage and secure their AWS workloads at scale.

This position represents a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor and help shape the technology, product, and business. A successful candidate will bring deep technical and software expertise, strong business acumen and judgment, the ability to define visionary products, the ability to hire and lead a team, and the desire to have an industry-wide impact.

About Us

Here at AWS, we embrace our differences. We are committed to furthering our culture of inclusion. We have ten employee-led affinity groups, reaching 40,000 employees in over 190 chapters globally. We have innovative benefit offerings, and host annual and ongoing learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences.

Mentorship & Career Growth Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we're building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Key job responsibilities

  • Own the technical vision and product roadmap for your team's services, defining system architecture and aligning priorities across engineering, product management, and partner teams to deliver scalable identity and access management solutions.
  • Lead, grow, and mentor a team of software development engineers, setting clear goals, providing actionable feedback, and creating development plans that help each team member advance their career.
  • Drive simplifications across your team's systems, leveraging generative AI tooling and automation where appropriate to augment productivity, evaluate outputs for quality, and apply responsible practices in your development workflows.
  • Coordinate cross-team programs and manage delivery risks by creating mechanisms to advance those programs, communicating status to stakeholders, and removing roadblocks so your team consistently ships high-quality software on schedule.
  • Make system design decisions for distributed services at scale, evaluating tradeoffs in maintainability, performance, and security while ensuring operational health across the software your team owns.

A day in the life As a Software Development Manager on the AWS Identity team, your morning may start with a design review where you and your engineers work through the architecture of a new access control service, weighing security requirements against performance goals. Later, you might partner with a product manager to refine upcoming feature priorities, then shift to a one-on-one with a team member to discuss their growth plan. You will stay connected to the technical details of your systems while ensuring your team has the support and clarity they need to deliver.
