Original job description

Amazon Web Service (AWS) operates 123 Availability Zones (AZs) within 39 geographic Regions around the world. Amazon’s AWS Data Centers (DCs) are a major component of worldwide cloud-computing infrastructure and are industry leading examples of critical facilities.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we’re looking for talented people who want to help. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Architects and Engineers in AWS work to design resilient, cost-effective DC facilities. We are responsible for achieving a world-class uptime for our customers and drive to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness, while finding new ways to meet AWS’s growing demand. We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs. As an Engineer at AWS you will have the opportunity to impact changes in our current design, as well as establish design procedures and protocols for future systems.

As a Sr. Fire Protection Engineer you are a technical leader in your field, collaborating with and leading the work of cross-functional teams including technical program management, product management, architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, supply chain management, operations, safety, security, finance, and legal. You will participate in external forums/consortiums to understand current trends and developments within the industry. Additionally, you will be a leader for fire protection design strategy and development. This role will communicate the technical decisions we make to Senior Management and will drive continuous improvements and governance of our designs.

Key job responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight and governance of the global Basis of Design (BOD)
  • Partner with AWS Risk Management, Construction Management, Procurement, Field Engineering and Operations to define building requirements and be a technical source for all building fire protection attributes
  • Decompose complex fire protection related issues into straightforward and actionable solutions and drive resolution of mitigation measures
  • Develop strategic prototypical building solutions which meet or exceed our quality requirements and drive value engineering and standardization of fire protection systems.
  • Serve as a technical advisor for AWS data center design projects
  • Collaborate with local regulatory agencies and certification agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and partner teams to drive infrastructure strategy, resolve deficiencies, and implement new mechanisms that simplify and improve critical facility systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure issues by applying technical expertise, identifying root causes of endemic problems, and delivering solutions that prevent recurrence.
  • Communicate technical designs, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment across teams and informed decision-making.
  • Mentor and coach fellow engineers, contributing to their professional development and strengthening the overall technical capability of the team. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%
