How would you like to be a part of Earth's most customer-centric company? You would work with teams of front-line responders who support the operations of some of the world's most powerful data centers. Our Data Center Engineering Operations team maintain and operate our critical infrastructure systems so that they are prepared to stand up against any situation.

AWS has the world's largest cloud computing portfolio. As an Amazonian you will work in some of the most sophisticated, safe, and secure data centers in the world. Our Chief Engineers (CE) help keep them that way by working with the brightest minds from around the globe to help test and implement the newest technology and work practices to meet the demands of a changing market.

We have a passion for learning and evolving, it's how we have helped define ourselves as leaders in the industry. Let's work hard, have fun, and make history!

As the Chief Engineer for the ATL Regional Services Team, you will be the technical lead for generator services and non-destructive testing (NDT) across the Atlanta region. You'll set the standard for how we maintain, test, and repair critical equipment, and you'll help build a new team from the ground up, including the processes, training, and mechanisms it will scale on.

Key job responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical expert for generator systems and non-destructive testing (NDT) of electrical equipment, including emergency response for critical power systems
  • Perform troubleshooting, repair, and root cause analysis on generator failures and electrical anomalies identified through NDT within established Service Level Agreements (SLA), and assess the impact on critical power infrastructure
  • Conduct and oversee generator preventive maintenance, fluid sampling (oil, coolant, fuel), load bank testing, and emissions stack testing to OEM, NFPA 110, and air permit requirements, and NDT of switchgear and transformers
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for generator maintenance and testing and NDT inspection programs
  • Train technicians on generator maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair, and on NDT methods including infrared thermography and partial discharge analysis
  • Establish performance benchmarks for generator systems, analyze NDT and fluid sampling trends, and prepare reports on testing results and maintenance activities
  • Communicate technical findings and risk from NDT and generator performance data to facility management and stakeholders
  • Collaborate with facility managers and vendors to coordinate generator maintenance schedules, stack testing, NDT programs, and OEM repairs
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, including NFPA 70E and LOTO, during generator maintenance and NDT operations
  • Maintain detailed records of generator maintenance, fluid sampling, stack test results, and NDT results using facility management software and Microsoft Office tools
  • Perform rotational on-call duties as the after-hours Services Team Manager for the data centers in the region, including responding to generator failures, NDT anomalies, and other site issues, and managing the investigation, mitigation, and recovery of the issue(s)

A day in the life The Services Team Chief Engineer is Amazon's front-line specialist for generator systems and non-destructive testing (NDT) of electrical equipment in mission-critical data center facilities that must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. The Chief Engineer leads and trains technicians in generator maintenance, troubleshooting, emissions stack testing, and emergency operations and in NDT procedures (including thermography and partial discharge analysis), while developing comprehensive training programs for these core areas. Project management is essential to the role, including oversight of generator upgrades and repairs and implementation of NDT programs. The Chief Engineer collaborates with engineering teams, NDT specialists, and vendors both locally and globally while maintaining independent project management responsibilities. They establish project milestones, manage procurement of specialized equipment and components, track costs, and document best practices for implementation across Amazon's global data center network.
