Original job description

Are you passionate about building software that makes a meaningful difference for millions of customers? We're looking for a Software Development Engineer II to join our team at Amazon, where you'll design, build, and operate systems that solve real problems at remarkable scale. In this role, you'll contribute across the full software development lifecycle - from understanding customer needs to deploying and maintaining production systems. You'll write high-quality code, collaborate with talented engineers, and help shape the technical direction of the software you work on. If you're a self-starter who thrives on solving complex problems with simple, elegant solutions, we'd love to hear from you.

Key job responsibilities

Design and implement software features and improvements across major portions of your team's systems, spanning the full development lifecycle including product definition, scoping, coding, testing, deployment, and operations.
Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code using optimal data structures and algorithms, and actively participate in code reviews to uphold quality standards and coach fellow engineers.
Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional peers to understand business and customer needs, translating requirements into effective technical solutions that balance scalability, performance, and maintainability.
Identify and resolve root causes of operational issues, driving permanent fixes and continuously improving your team's operational processes and software reliability.
Evaluate new tools, approaches, and generative AI capabilities to augment productivity and quality, making recommendations for adoption to your teammates and colleagues.

A day in the life You will spend time writing code for a new feature, participating in design discussions with your team, or reviewing a pull request from a colleague. You'll regularly connect with product managers and stakeholders to stay grounded in customer needs, and you'll mentor newer engineers as they ramp up on your team's systems.

About the team Our team is focused on building and improving software that directly impacts the Amazon customer experience. We value collaboration, technical rigor, and a commitment to getting the details right. As a member of this team, you'll have the opportunity to work on challenging problems, contribute to long-term architectural decisions, and grow your skills alongside experienced engineers who are invested in your development. We are building an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and new ideas are welcomed. Basic qualifications

3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
Experience programming with at least one software programming language Preferred qualifications
3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
