Original job description
Join our Robotics Development and Packaging Innovation Experiences team as a Software Development Engineer and help shape the future of sustainable packaging at Amazon. You'll design and deploy large-scale systems that decide which products get tested, collect and verify the physical attributes of items, and turn that data into packaging decisions that reduce waste, lower our cost to serve, and support Amazon's commitment to the Climate Pledge. Our products and programs are public facing, so you'll have a unique opportunity to shape what customers experience on every order.
As a Software Development Engineer on our team, you'll focus on building intelligent packaging deterministic workflows and large-scale platforms that power our packaging operations worldwide. These systems process hundreds of millions of products every day, across hundreds of fulfillment centers and every customer order. That work drives hundreds of millions of dollars in savings, reduces packaging waste and damage, and puts sustainable packaging choices in front of millions of customers. You'll own the services that decide which products to test, the tools fulfillment center associates and test labs rely on to test, inspect, and escalate packaging issues, and the customer-facing packaging experiences across the product detail page, cart, and checkout, including concealment for items whose packaging could reveal what's inside. You'll participate in code reviews with peers, mentor junior engineers as they grow their skills, and contribute to discussions that shape our technical strategy. Beyond individual contributions, you'll help establish best practices that ensure quality across our infrastructure and production services, which form the backbone of our packaging engines and support our Climate Pledge and sustainability initiatives.
Your work will shape how millions of packages ship every day, with every decision explainable down to a single product. You will build the source of truth for how Amazon understands the physical world of its products: what they're made of, how they hold up in transit, and how they should ship. You will design systems where every attribute carries its full history, including its source, confidence, and the test or model that produced it, so teams across Amazon can build on it with confidence. You will drive intelligent prioritization that puts testing effort where it creates the most value, and help build a platform where new packaging programs, such as flexible and automated packaging, launch quickly through configuration. We are seeking an engineer who is a true owner: hands-on, comfortable with ambiguity, and excited to define new technology that will be used by Amazon fulfillment and packaging services around the world.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and deploy item packaging intelligence workflows and platforms that serve our worldwide customer base
- Partner with product leaders, operations, and cross-functional teams to influence packaging roadmap decisions and define technical strategy aligned with sustainability goals
- Build and maintain core infrastructure, production services, and tools that support fulfillment centers, test labs, and field operations
- Deliver customer-facing packaging experiences across the product detail page, cart, and checkout. Make sure eligibility and concealment data shows up accurately, run controlled experiments, and resolve customer-reported issues at the root cause
- Build toward a unified, traceable item attribute store and configurable prioritization that lets new packaging programs launch without new engineering effort
- Drive system architecture decisions and establish best practices that enable code quality, reliability, and scalability across our software systems
- Coach and support junior engineers in their technical growth and help them develop their skills in building large-scale distributed systems
