Original job description

Build software used every day on farms around the world.

At VAS, we're building technology that helps dairy producers operate more efficiently, make better decisions, and feed a growing world. Our FeedComp platform is a mission-critical mobile application used in real-world environments where reliability matters, whether users are online or working in areas with limited connectivity.

We're looking for a Senior Mobile Software Developer to help modernize and evolve our React Native application into a best-in-class mobile platform. This is an opportunity to solve challenging engineering problems involving offline-first architecture, Bluetooth device integration, synchronization, scalability, and performance while helping shape the long-term technical direction of the product. This role is remote within the US, with preference for candidates located in the Upper Midwest.

Why You'll Love This Role This is more than building mobile screens. You'll solve complex engineering challenges that directly impact customers around the world.

In this role, you'll:

Modernize a large-scale production React Native application
Design reliable offline-first mobile experiences
Build Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) integrations with connected devices
Improve application performance, synchronization, and reliability
Influence architecture and engineering standards
Mentor other developers and provide technical leadership
Work directly with customers to understand real-world workflows and build solutions that make a difference

What You'll Do

Design, develop, test, and maintain React Native application features
Build reliable mobile experiences that perform seamlessly online and offline
Design and improve local data storage and synchronization capabilities
Contribute to application architecture, scalability, and long-term technical direction
Collaborate with Product, UX, QA, and Engineering to deliver high-quality solutions
Participate in code reviews and mentor junior developers
Continuously improve engineering practices, code quality, and team effectiveness
Occasionally visit customer farms to better understand user workflows and identify opportunities for innovation

What We're Looking For

Qualifications

6+ years of professional mobile application development experience, including strong expertise with React Native
Experience designing and building scalable, maintainable mobile applications using sound software architecture and engineering best practices
Experience developing applications that support intermittent or offline connectivity, including local databases and mobile synchronization strategies
Experience integrating Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or similar hardware/device communication into mobile applications
Native Android or iOS development experience is a plus
Experience working in Agile software development environments using Jira, Gitflow, and modern CI/CD practices
Demonstrated ability to mentor developers, lead technical initiatives, and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams
Interest in learning about agriculture and leveraging technology to improve farm operations
This role requires up to 10% travel, including occasional visits to customer dairy farms

Why VAS? At VAS, you'll join a collaborative engineering team with the agility of a small software company and the stability and global reach of URUS. We believe great software comes from curious people who enjoy solving difficult problems, learning from customers, and continuously improving how they build.

Your work won't disappear into the background. You'll build technology used every day by customers around the world while solving meaningful technical challenges with modern mobile engineering practices.

For the past 40 years we’ve woken up each day to support those that never stop feeding the world – and we have no plans to quit. We set the standard for farm management solutions and fix our eyes on raising the bar to meet the next generation of expectations.

Our software and information solutions help collect and connect a farm's data – from herd management to feed performance, tracking and more. These insights are a source of truth, empowering producers and their trusted advisors to make profit-driven and sustainable management decisions.

Whether near or far, large or small, VAS is at the heart of your dairy.

VAS has deep roots in the industry through its origin within the URUS family of companies. As a holding company with cooperative and private ownership, URUS is a family of businesses at the heart of the dairy and beef industry – Alta Genetics, GENEX, Genetics Australia, Leachman Cattle, Jetstream, PEAK, SCCL, Trans Ova Genetics and VAS. Each organization has its unique identity, products, and services. These companies work globally to provide cutting-edge dairy and beef genetics, customized reproductive services to maximize conceptions, dairy management information to take producers to the frontline of progressive dairy farming, and an array of products and services to help bovines reach their full genetic potential. URUS has 9 brands in 17 retail countries and employs nearly 2,800 people globally.
