Original job description

Our Product Solutions team is looking for a Product Engineer to drive internal product outcomes across the business. This role sits at the intersection of business strategy and technical execution. You'll be the connective tissue between our business leaders, internal teams, and development team, translating real operational problems into scoped, shipped solutions. You connect the dots across teams, tools, and data, and you see how today's quick fix fits into a larger product vision.

If you have already built and shipped your own software projects, especially in freight or logistics, we want to hear from you!

This is not a traditional development role. You are a technically fluent problem solver who moves fast, thinks in systems, and delivers outcomes. Whether that means building a solution yourself using modern AI-powered tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Replit, or handing a precise, well-scoped plan to our development team to execute.

Ally sees significant value in technically enabled individuals who can own a problem end-to-end, from the first conversation with a stakeholder to a working solution in production, and who keep growing that solution long after launch. You know when an idea should stay a quick prototype, when it has earned a place as a team tool, and when it is ready to become a full product. You have real freedom in how you build, within clear bounds: every prototype, tool, and product you ship moves the company toward the outcomes in Ally's strategic vision.

The Ally Logistics team is committed to hustling each day, because #HUSTLE means something more here. Our mission as a company is To Move Freight, Better. This mission bleeds into everything we do, as we are continually on a quest for better - better service, better communication, better culture, better technology, better growth. Click here to learn more about what it’s like to work at Ally Logistics.

KEY ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS:

HUMBLE: Confidence is key, but so is humility. Our #HUSTLE values say it all.
HUNGRY: A healthy sense of competition is a necessity here. We’re seeking individuals who are striving for both professional and financial success, and who are seeking any and all opportunities for growth.
SMART: We’re looking for individuals who are resourceful and organized problem-solvers, diving head first into problems rather than straying away from them.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

Lead discovery conversations with business leaders and internal teams to deeply understand operational pain points, workflows, and goals
Translate business needs into clear, well-scoped project plans including requirements, architecture, timelines, and success criteria
Own a product space across multiple internal tools and operational software platforms - discovering the opportunity, developing the solution, and maintaining it through prioritization, adoption, and continuous improvement
Sequence work deliberately from prototype → tool → product: validate ideas fast, harden what works, and scale what earns adoption
Connect the dots between tools, data, and teams to shape a larger product vision and roadmap, rather than a collection of one-off fixes
Build freely within the bounds of the company's strategic vision - choose problems by the outcomes leadership has set, and show how each build moves those outcomes forward
Rapidly prototype and deliver solutions using AI coding agents and low-code development tools, owning the build when speed demands it
Architect solutions with scalability in mind - understanding how systems should be structured, integrated, and maintained at scale
Leverage LLMs and agentic tooling to design and build intelligent, automated workflows that reduce friction across freight operations
Write clear technical specifications and handoff documentation that enable the development team to execute with precision and full context
Coordinate cross-functional adoption of new tools and processes, driving alignment and communication across departments
Proactively surface bottlenecks and inefficiencies through end-user feedback loops and propose actionable improvements
Configure, customize, and maintain our TMS and broader operations tech stack

BENEFITS & PERKS:

Health / Dental / Vision Insurance Plans
401K Plan with Employer Match
Life Insurance Plan (100% employer paid)
PTO Plan (3 weeks PTO for new employees, grows with tenure)
6 paid holidays
Paid Parental Leaving Bond
Free professional coaching through Boon Health
Baby-feeding support and on-site Lounge through Pumpspotting
Comprehensive training program
Commitment to defend employees who have signed predatory non-competes (Learn more here)
Ongoing, in-house professional development
In-office gym complete with strength and cardio equipment as well as Peloton bikes
On-site espresso machine and snack machine
On-site golf simulator

QUALIFICATIONS:

A successful candidate must possess the following traits/skills:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience building and shipping software
A portfolio of software projects you have built and shipped, ideally on your own using AI-powered development tools
Strong working knowledge of LLMs, agentic coding frameworks, and AI-powered development tools
Technically fluent - able to understand how systems are built, integrated, and scaled without necessarily hand-coding every solution
Strong understanding of APIs, including RESTful design, authentication patterns, and how services communicate across systems
Proven ability to run discovery conversations and translate ambiguous business needs into structured, actionable project plans
Demonstrated project management skills - able to define scope, build timelines, manage dependencies, and drive initiatives from kickoff through delivery
Experience owning products or tools end-to-end, from ideation through delivery and ongoing maintenance, with the vision to see how individual tools connect into a larger product
Comfortable operating across the full stack of a problem - business process, tooling, data, and people
Experience with low-code/no-code automation platforms
Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
Strong documentation skills - able to produce clear technical specs, process guides, and decision records
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Experience with project management software (e.g., Jira, Asana, Linear, Monday.com, or similar)
Experience in freight brokerage, trucking, or logistics (including TMS, load boards, or carrier vetting) is a strong plus

ADDITIONAL INFO:

This is NOT a remote position.
A cover letter is required, even if it's brief. Tell us why you are a fit, and include a link to something you've built!
A projects portfolio is highly encouraged!
Signing a non-compete agreement is NOT a pre-requisite for employment. However, we do require all employees to sign our standard non-solicit and confidentiality agreement.

ACCOLADES & INDUSTRY AFFILIATIONS:

One of the Inc. 5000 fastest-growing companies four years running
One of West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Employers
Member of Women in Transportation
