Job Title: Production MIG WelderJob DescriptionThis role focuses on high-volume production welding in a manufacturing environment, working primarily with mild steel and occasional stainless steel and nickel alloys. You will perform MIG welding in multiple positions, interpret welding blueprints, and produce precise welds on a wide range of part sizes and thicknesses while maintaining quality and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Perform production welding in a manufacturing environment, focusing on consistent quality and efficiency.
  • Carry out MIG welding approximately 98% of the time and pulse welding approximately 2% of the time.
  • Weld in flat, vertical, horizontal, and occasional out-of-position positions as required by each job.
  • Work with materials consisting of approximately 90% mild steel and 10% stainless steel and nickel alloys.
  • Weld material thicknesses ranging from 24 gauge to 1 inch, with most work around 7 gauge.
  • Produce typical welds of approximately 2-inch beads, with occasional longer welds depending on the application.
  • Perform various weld types, including fillet welds, butt welds, and circular welds.
  • Handle parts ranging from 2 inches to 6 feet in length, using appropriate lifting methods and tools.
  • Manually handle parts typically weighing less than 50 pounds and use an overhead crane for larger or awkward parts.
  • Read and interpret welding blueprints and weld prints to understand job requirements and specifications.
  • Apply shop math skills, including understanding decimal measurements, to ensure accurate fabrication and fit-up.
  • Use measurement tools such as tape measures, sliding squares, and calipers to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Perform fitting and fabrication tasks as needed to prepare parts for welding.
  • Use grinding tools to clean, prepare, and finish welds and components.
  • Complete weld tests, including 22-gauge fillet welds in flat and vertical down positions and 22-gauge butt welds in flat position, to demonstrate welding proficiency.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining attention to detail and adherence to quality standards.
  • Follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Collaborate with other welders and fabrication team members to meet production goals and deadlines.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of MIG welding experience in a production or similar environment.
  • Strong production MIG welding skills with the ability to maintain consistent quality and output.
  • Ability to weld in flat, vertical, horizontal, and occasional out-of-position positions.
  • Ability to read and interpret welding blueprints, weld prints, and welding symbols.
  • Understanding of decimal measurements, such as converting fractions to decimals (for example, 1/4 inch equals 0.25).
  • Proficiency using a tape measure for accurate measurements.
  • Ability to use a sliding square for layout and alignment.
  • Ability to use calipers or a willingness to learn their use for precise measurements.
  • Experience working with mild steel, with some exposure to stainless steel and nickel alloys.
  • Ability to perform fillet, butt, and circular welds on various material thicknesses.
  • Capability to handle parts up to approximately 50 pounds and safely use an overhead crane for heavier or awkward parts.
  • Detail-oriented approach with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Comfort working in a production welding environment with a focus on efficiency and quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with pulse welding, even at a basic level, is beneficial.
  • Background in production welding or fabrication environments.
  • Familiarity with grinding tools for weld preparation and finishing.
  • Experience with fitting and fabrication tasks prior to welding.
  • Comfort using shop math for measurements, layout, and verification.
