Job Title: Structure TechnicianJob DescriptionThe Structure Technician accurately drills precision holes and assembles aerospace structural hardware using specialized tools, fixtures, and adhesives. This role focuses on high-precision mechanical assembly, structural bonding, and in-process inspection of flight hardware, ensuring all work meets tight aerospace tolerances and quality standards.Responsibilities
- Drill precision holes in flight hardware, selecting appropriate drill motors, drill sizes, and pneumatic drilling equipment based on material and engineering requirements.
- Use the correct tooling, jigs, fixtures, or egg cups to ensure alignment, accuracy, and repeatability when drilling structural components.
- Assemble structural hardware using structural adhesives, including proper surface preparation, bond prepping, adhesive application, and curing according to specifications.
- Install and properly torque fasteners, including rivets, hiloks, and other mechanical fasteners, using torque wrenches and torque tools to meet specified values.
- Install inserts such as helicoils and other threaded inserts in aluminum and related aerospace materials while maintaining required precision tolerances.
- Perform in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, and other hand measurement tools to verify dimensions within tolerance (including tolerances in the range of thousandths of an inch).
- Carry out blending and deburr operations using appropriate hand or power tools to remove burrs, sharp edges, and surface imperfections from drilled or machined areas.
- Apply alodine, sealants, and other protective coatings to hardware after blending or deburring to protect surfaces and maintain corrosion resistance and structural integrity.
- Work with structural mechanisms and assemblies, ensuring correct fit, function, and alignment of components during mechanical assembly.
- Follow 5S practices to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area within the aerospace warehouse environment.
- Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, when qualified, to safely move parts, tools, and assemblies within the facility.
- Adhere to aerospace quality standards, work instructions, and safety procedures throughout all drilling, bonding, fastening, and inspection activities.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience drilling precision holes in structural aerospace components using pneumatic drills and appropriate drill motors and drill bits.
- Proficiency working with aluminum and other aerospace materials while maintaining tight precision tolerances, including tolerances in the range of thousandths of an inch.
- Ability to select and use correct tooling, jigs, fixtures, or egg cups to ensure accurate drilling and assembly of flight hardware.
- Strong skills in mechanical assembly, including rivet installation, hilok installation, and other fastening techniques.
- Experience using torque wrenches and torque tools to properly torque fasteners to specified values.
- Knowledge of structural bonding processes, including bond prepping, surface preparation, and use of structural adhesives.
- Ability to install helicoils and other threaded inserts accurately and reliably.
- Competence in performing in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, and similar precision measurement tools.
- Skill in performing blending and deburr operations using hand or power tools without compromising part geometry or tolerances.
- Familiarity with applying sealants and protective coatings such as alodine to aerospace hardware.
- Experience as an aerospace technician or equivalent experience in aerospace structural assembly.
- Understanding and application of 5S practices in a production or warehouse setting.
- Ability to clearly explain drilling processes and steps, such as walking through how to drill a specified hole size safely and accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with structural mechanisms and complex mechanical assemblies.
- Previous work in an aerospace warehouse or aerospace manufacturing environment.
- Forklift operation experience or certification for safe material handling.
- Demonstrated ability to work with precision tolerance requirements, including ±0.001 inch or similar tight tolerances.
- Comfort working with sealants, adhesives, and surface treatments in a production setting.
