Original job description

CNC Machinist Apprentice Build Your Skills. Learn CNC Programming. Grow Into a Skilled Machinist. Are you mechanically inclined, comfortable around CNC equipment, and ready to take your machining career to the next level? Were looking for a CNC Machinist Apprentice to join a small, family-owned machine shop specializing in precision aluminum and plastic components. This is a great opportunity for someone who already has hands-on machining experience but wants more than simply loading parts and pressing cycle start. You'll gain exposure to CNC mills and lathes, machine setups, Fanuc controls, Mastercam, troubleshooting, precision inspection, and eventually CNC programming while working alongside experienced machinists who can help you continue developing your craft. If you've spent a few years in machining and are ready to learn more, take on more, and build a long-term career in the trade, this could be the opportunity for you.

🔧 What You'll Be Doing You'll work on a variety of jobs rather than the same repetitive part every day. Responsibilities include:

  • Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes
  • Complete tooling changes, offsets, and machine adjustments
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, engineering drawings, and GD&T
  • Produce precision parts from aluminum and plastic
  • Inspect finished components using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring equipment
  • Monitor machining operations including drilling, turning, facing, grooving, threading, and other processes
  • Troubleshoot dimensional issues and make adjustments to maintain specifications
  • Work with Fanuc controls and gain additional experience with Mastercam
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections
  • Tear down and clean machines following completed jobs
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance
  • Maintain accurate production and quality documentation
  • Assist with editing prints and reverse engineering existing components
  • Keep your work area clean, organized, and safe

And as your skills grow... You'll have the opportunity to develop your CNC programming abilities, including setting zero and reference points, working with tool registers and compensation, modifying programs, and eventually creating programs for mills and lathes.

🎯 What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who has a solid machining foundation but doesn't need to know everything on day one.Ideally, you'll bring:

  • 24 years of machining experience or on-the-job training
  • Hands-on experience with CNC mills and/or lathes
  • Experience performing basic machine setups
  • Ability to make tooling changes and offset adjustments
  • Ability to read blueprints and engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of GD&T
  • Experience using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools
  • Basic knowledge of CNC programs and machine controls
  • Strong mechanical and mathematical aptitude
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining and dimensional problems
  • Strong attention to detail

Experience with Fanuc controls, Mastercam, or CamWorks is a plus.

What Will Make You Successful Here Technical skills are important, but we're equally interested in finding the right person. You'll fit in well if you:

  • Take pride in producing quality work
  • Have a strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Show up ready to learn
  • Ask questions when you don't know something
  • Can take direction and apply feedback
  • Enjoy troubleshooting and figuring out how things work
  • Want to become a better machinist rather than simply operate a machine
  • Are looking for an opportunity where you can continue developing your skills

🚀 Why This Opportunity? This isn't a position where you'll be stuck doing one repetitive operation indefinitely. You'll join a small, family-owned CNC shop where you'll get exposure to different jobs, setups, machines, and machining challenges. You'll have an opportunity to expand beyond machine operation into setup, troubleshooting, print work, reverse engineering, and CNC programming. For someone early in their machining career, that means an opportunity to develop a much broader skill set and become a more well-rounded machinist. Ready to turn your machining experience into a career? Apply today and take the next step toward becoming a highly skilled CNC machinist and programmer.
