Job Title: CNC Lathe/Mill MachinistJob DescriptionThis role focuses on setting up and operating CNC lathes and mills to produce precision components in a low-volume, high-mix production environment. The CNC Lathe/Mill Machinist reads and interprets blueprints and drawings, plans machining operations, edits and understands CNC programming, and ensures all parts meet tight tolerances and quality specifications. The position involves frequent setups and changeovers, working primarily with HAAS controls on 3-axis mills and standard and Y-axis lathes.Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications, including geometric dimensions and tolerances, welding symbols, material types, and material shapes.
- Plan machining operations by studying work orders, blueprints, drawings, specifications, materials, and machining parameters, and by interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances.
- Perform machining-related math, including fractional and decimal conversions, basic trigonometry (sine and cosine), and calculations for dimensions, tolerances, and missing linear or angular dimensions.
- Properly set up and operate CNC lathes, including selecting and installing appropriate fixtures, jigs, tooling, and workholding for each job.
- Machine parts and components to required specifications, maintaining close tolerances and verifying that all parts meet quality and dimensional requirements.
- Edit and program CNC mills utilizing HAAS controllers, including making adjustments to speeds, feeds, and tool paths as needed.
- Plan and perform a wide variety of diversified, close-tolerance milling operations in a low-volume, high-mix environment.
- Utilize machining tools such as high-speed drills, carbide drills, high-speed taps, roll-forming taps, and reamers safely and effectively.
- Handle short production runs with multiple setups and changeovers per day, maintaining efficiency and accuracy throughout.
- Apply conversational programming and/or G-code to create, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs for lathes and mills.
- Ensure machines are properly set up for simple geometric part shapes and adjust setups as needed to maintain productivity and quality.
- Work primarily with HAAS-controlled equipment, including 3-axis mills and standard and Y-axis lathes, and support future upgrades to newer machines.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety guidelines and procedures in the machining department.
- Collaborate with team members and other departments as needed to meet production schedules and resolve machining or programming issues.
- Operate with a high degree of self-sufficiency, taking ownership of setups, programming edits, and quality checks for assigned jobs.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 to 5 years of experience working with CNC lathes, including full setup responsibilities beyond basic operation.
- Strong Experience in short production runs with multiple setups and changeovers per day.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with conversational programming and/or G-code for CNC machines.
- Proficiency in editing and programming CNC mills using HAAS controllers.
- Hands-on experience with CNC lathe and mill operations in a low-volume, high-mix production environment.
- Capability to perform machining math, including fractional and decimal conversions, basic trigonometry (sine and cosine), and tolerance calculations.
- Skill in properly setting up and operating CNC lathes and mills to produce parts to close tolerances.
- Ability to use machining tools such as high-speed drills, carbide drills, high-speed taps, roll-forming taps, and reamers.
- Competence in blueprint reading and interpreting welding symbols, material types, and material shapes.
- Experience working with HAAS-controlled equipment, including lathes and mills.
- Demonstrated self-sufficiency in managing setups, programming edits, and production tasks with minimal supervision.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Trade school education in machining or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Experience with Fanuc, Okuma, and other CNC controls is beneficial.
- Familiarity with Mastercam or other CAD/CAM software for programming CNC machines.
- Knowledge of SolidWorks or similar CAD tools for interpreting part models and drawings.
- Understanding of CAD/CAM workflows and G & M codes for CNC programming.
- Experience with tooling selection and optimization for milling and turning operations.
- Experience in low-volume, high-mix production environments with frequent changeovers.
- Ability to perform setups for simple geometric shapes and adapt to a variety of part configurations.
- Comfort working with 3-axis mills and standard and Y-axis lathes, with interest in learning newer equipment as upgrades occur.
