What is the Opportunity?
Safer. Faster. Smarter. This is how Aecon Utilities is committed to delivering projects. Aecon Utilities is a leading North American utility infrastructure provider with a strong track record delivering safe, reliable and innovative solutions across electrical, telecommunications, pipeline distribution and renewable energy markets. With operations across North America, Aecon Utilities supports critical utility infrastructure that powers and keeps communities connected. Guided by our core value of Safety Always, we partner with clients to build the infrastructure that powers the future.
As part of the Aecon Utilities sector, Aecon Telecommunications (Telecom) partners with major service providers across North America to deliver turnkey fiber installations, 5G network expansions, and ongoing legacy network services.
With a strong focus on execution, Aecon Telecommunications supports the full lifecycle of telecom infrastructure delivery, providing scalable, high-quality solutions that enable reliable connectivity for both urban and emerging markets. Working closely with clients, the team ensures projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with evolving network demands.
Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Construction Inspector is responsible for observing, verifying, and documenting telecommunications construction activities in the field. The role performs inspections against approved drawings, specifications, permits, quality requirements, and applicable construction standards; maintains objective and complete inspection records; and promptly reports deficiencies, variances, safety observations, and field conditions to the Construction Manager.
The Construction Inspector does not direct crews, authorize changes to scope, approve additional work, or assume responsibility for subcontractor performance, project cost, or schedule. The role provides timely and accurate field information to support the Construction Manager and project team in making construction and project-management decisions.
Locations: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois
We are seeking qualified professionals interested in future opportunities within our growing operations across these states. This posting is intended to establish a talent pool for anticipated project and operational needs.
This role will remain open, and qualified candidates may be contacted as new opportunities become available.
What You'll Do Here:
- Perform routine field inspections of telecommunications construction activities to verify conformance with approved drawings, specifications, permits, quality requirements, and applicable construction standards.
- Observe and document underground and aerial construction activities, including excavation, directional drilling, conduit placement, fiber installation, restoration, and traffic-control conditions, as applicable to the assigned work.
- Review available construction drawings, utility locates, permits, and directional-drilling alignment information before and during inspections.
- Verify and record installed quantities, work locations, construction progress, visible site conditions, and completed activities using inspection reports, construction diaries, photographs, and other required records.
- Identify and objectively document construction deficiencies, deviations, incomplete work, safety observations, quality concerns, and potential conflicts with drawings, locates, permits, or specifications.
- Promptly communicate inspection findings to the Construction Manager and escalate conditions requiring immediate attention, technical interpretation, corrective action, or management direction.
- Track the status of reported deficiencies and document whether corrective work has been completed, without independently approving deviations or directing the method of correction.
- Maintain complete, timely, and accurate inspection records to support quality assurance, project reporting, quantity reconciliation, change evaluation, and project closeout.
- Document field conditions and installed quantities that may support the project team’s review of subcontractor work, scope changes, claims, or extra-work requests.
- Observe traffic-control and site-protection measures and immediately report visible concerns or non-compliance in accordance with established escalation requirements.
- Provide factual field information requested by the Construction Manager, Project Manager, or Project Coordinator to support scheduling, material planning, progress reporting, billing, and closeout.
- Communicate professionally with crews, subcontractors, clients, property owners, and other stakeholders while referring operational direction, commitments, disputes, and scope-related decisions to the Construction Manager.
- Follow all company safety requirements and immediately escalate conditions presenting an actual or potential risk to workers, the public, property, or project delivery.
What You Bring to the Team:
- Experience in telecommunications, fiber, underground utility, or related construction.
- Previous construction inspection, utility inspection, or field-quality experience is preferred.
- Working knowledge of telecommunications construction methods, including underground and/or aerial installation activities.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, utility locates, permits, and directional-drilling alignment information.
- Ability to distinguish between approved work, construction deficiencies, field variances, and conditions requiring management or technical review.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to prepare accurate, objective, and timely field documentation.
- Sound judgment, including the ability to recognize when an issue requires immediate escalation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate findings clearly without assuming responsibility for directing construction work.
- Comfortable working outdoors, travelling between active project sites, and working in varying weather and site conditions.
- Proficiency with electronic inspection reports, photographs, mobile field applications, and standard Microsoft Office applications is preferred.
- Valid driver’s licence and an acceptable driving record.
The expected hourly range for this role is $33/hr - $44/hr USD
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
This role is eligible to participate in Aecon’s discretionary Short Term Incentive Plan (STIP).
