Original job description
Job Title: Electrical Engineer Job DescriptionThis role advances utility-scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects through all phases of electrical design by providing technical oversight, coordination, and thorough review of electrical deliverables. You ensure that electrical designs are high quality, constructible, code compliant, and aligned with project scope, schedule, cost, customer requirements, and overall execution objectives. You serve as a key technical resource for internal teams and external partners, helping to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective renewable energy projects.Responsibilities
- Lead the progression of electrical design from preliminary design through issued-for-construction (IFC) and construction phases, ensuring deliverables are completed in sequence to support project schedules.
- Review and validate electrical design outputs, including conductor schedules, equipment specifications and layouts, monitoring and communication systems, grounding systems, string layouts, voltage drop calculations, and related electrical deliverables.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for electrical design and constructability, including DC collection systems, AC collection systems, medium-voltage (MV) systems, equipment selection, grounding, monitoring, communications, and electrical code compliance.
- Provide technical guidance and support to internal teams, external engineering partners, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure consistent and accurate electrical designs.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Preconstruction, Estimating, Procurement, and Operations teams to align electrical design with project execution strategies, procurement plans, installation sequencing, and cost expectations.
- Conduct structured electrical design reviews at key milestones, including 30% design, 90% design, IFC, and construction-phase revisions, to ensure completeness, accuracy, and constructability.
- Identify and document risks, gaps, and inconsistencies in electrical design packages and drive timely resolution with internal and external stakeholders.
- Evaluate electrical design decisions for constructability, installation efficiency, equipment availability, code compliance, customer requirements, and cost impacts, recommending improvements where needed.
- Coordinate and communicate with customers, developers, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), external engineering firms, regulatory agencies, vendors, and subcontractors to align on electrical design approaches, technical requirements, and compliance expectations.
- Support permitting and regulatory coordination by ensuring electrical designs comply with NEC requirements, customer specifications, jurisdictional requirements, and applicable industry standards.
- Provide technical support during construction, including review of field issues, design clarifications, responses to RFIs, assessment of change impacts, and resolution of electrical installation or constructability concerns.
- Manage and maintain project electrical files, drawings, documents, records, and design information within company systems to ensure accurate and accessible project documentation.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of electrical design processes, review standards, templates, and lessons learned to improve consistency, quality, and execution across utility-scale projects.
- Balance multiple complex projects and design priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy, accountability, and execution quality.
- Travel to project sites as needed to review existing conditions, support design coordination, assist with resolution of field issues, and validate electrical systems or installation quality.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in solar or power systems design.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and renewable energy standards.
- Hands-on experience with electrical design for DC power, AC power, medium-voltage systems, grounding, and voltage considerations in renewable energy applications.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating and reviewing electrical drawings.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam for markup and review of design documents.
- Proficiency with PVCase for solar layout and design.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, analysis, and communication.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and design priorities simultaneously.
- Demonstrated experience with electrical design review, constructability assessment, and support during construction phases.
- Familiarity with project management concepts in the context of electrical and renewable energy projects.
