Job Title: Engineer / Estimator Deep Foundations & ShoringJob DescriptionThis role combines structural and geotechnical engineering with construction estimating for design-build deep foundation and shoring projects. You will contribute from preliminary design and pursuit strategy through project execution, developing solutions that are technically sound, constructible, and cost competitive. You will collaborate closely with estimating, operations, project management, and field leadership to deliver high-quality, cost-effective deep foundation and shoring solutions.Responsibilities
- Develop preliminary structural and geotechnical designs for deep foundation systems, including cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles, auger cast piles, displacement piles, micropiles, helical piles, and ground improvement solutions.
- Design shoring and earth-retention systems such as soldier pile and lagging, sheet piles, and tieback anchor systems.
- Review and interpret geotechnical reports, boring logs, structural drawings, specifications, and site conditions to inform design and estimating decisions.
- Perform structural and geotechnical calculations to size and optimize foundation and shoring systems for safety, performance, and cost.
- Evaluate alternative foundation and shoring approaches to identify constructible and cost-effective solutions for each project.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work associated with deep foundations and shoring.
- Develop production rates and unit pricing based on project-specific conditions and historical performance data.
- Solicit, review, and evaluate subcontractor, supplier, and equipment quotes to support accurate and competitive bids.
- Prepare complete bid packages, including scope narratives, pricing, schedules, clarifications, and exclusions, in coordination with estimating and project teams.
- Identify geotechnical, access, schedule, and constructability risks during the estimating process and communicate them clearly to stakeholders.
- Participate in bid strategy meetings and support design-build and design-assist pursuits with technical input and pricing strategies.
- Develop value-engineering alternatives that improve project cost, schedule, and constructability without compromising performance.
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers and Superintendents to ensure estimates accurately reflect field conditions, construction means and methods, and project constraints.
- Provide technical support during design finalization and early project execution, including design adjustments based on field feedback.
- Conduct periodic site visits to assess field conditions, validate assumptions, and understand project constraints impacting design and estimating.
- Use estimating software and construction management tools to prepare, track, and refine estimates and proposals for deep foundation and shoring projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between engineering design, construction planning, and project financial goals.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably involving structural or geotechnical design, deep foundations, shoring, or earth-retention systems.
- Strong understanding of deep foundation and shoring methods, including CIDH piles, auger cast piles, micropiles, tiebacks, grouting, helical piles, and ground improvement techniques.
- Ability to interpret geotechnical reports, boring logs, structural drawings, and project specifications accurately.
- Experience using structural and/or geotechnical design and analysis software for foundation and shoring design.
- Solid understanding of construction estimating practices, including quantity takeoffs, unit pricing, production rates, and proposal development.
- Ability to translate engineering concepts into practical, constructible, and cost-effective estimates.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate multiple design and construction options.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and design pursuits simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word for calculations, documentation, and report preparation.
- Experience with estimating software and construction management tools related to deep foundations and shoring projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on design-build or design-assist projects involving deep foundations and shoring.
- Background in construction management or field exposure to foundational drilling and shoring operations.
- Familiarity with shorting and shoring systems from both design and estimating perspectives.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with estimating, operations, project management, and field leadership teams.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and pursuit timelines.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, complete, and well-documented estimates and designs.
Work EnvironmentThe role operates in a hybrid office and field environment focused on deep foundation and shoring construction projects. You will spend significant time in an office setting using structural and geotechnical design software, estimating software, and standard productivity tools such as Microsoft Excel and Word to prepare designs, estimates, and bid packages. You will also conduct periodic site visits to active or prospective construction sites to assess field conditions, access constraints, and geotechnical factors that influence design and pricing. Work hours typically follow standard business schedules, with flexibility required during critical bid deadlines and major pursuits. The culture emphasizes collaboration between engineering, estimating, operations, project management, and field leadership, encouraging open communication and shared problem-solving. Site visits may require appropriate field attire and personal protective equipment in accordance with project and safety requirements.
