Job Title: Satellite Systems Test EngineerJob DescriptionThe Satellite Systems Test Engineer will develop, prepare, and execute integrated spacecraft testing, combining detailed test planning with hands-on satellite vehicle test execution. In this role, you will create test plans, procedures, scripts, and test architectures; support spacecraft integration and initial turn-on; troubleshoot complex system-level anomalies; and collaborate closely with subsystem teams through issue resolution. You will have direct responsibility for product readiness, environmental testing, anomaly resolution, and mission preparation across multiple spacecraft subsystems.Responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive integrated spacecraft test plans, procedures, scripts, and test architectures for system-level satellite and spacecraft vehicle testing.
- Execute hands-on testing of integrated satellite and spacecraft vehicles, including functional, performance, and environmental test campaigns.
- Support spacecraft integration activities and initial vehicle turn-on, ensuring all subsystems operate correctly at the system level.
- Troubleshoot complex system-level anomalies, independently identify root causes, and drive resolution in coordination with subsystem teams.
- Collaborate with Electrical, EPS, GN&C, C&DH, Propulsion, Thermal, Power, and other spacecraft subsystem teams to validate interfaces and end-to-end system performance.
- Perform integrated test planning and scripting using Python, C++, or other object-oriented programming languages to automate and streamline test execution.
- Utilize tools such as COSMOS, Matlab, LabVIEW, and network architecture utilities to support test execution, data collection, and analysis.
- Participate in and support TVAC (thermal vacuum) testing and EMI/EMC test events, including temporary 24/7 coverage during critical test phases.
- Work closely with test leads to define test objectives, align test activities with program milestones, and ensure readiness for mission operations.
- Maintain strong ownership of assigned spacecraft test activities, proactively address program roadblocks, and ensure timely completion of test deliverables.
- Document test results, anomalies, and resolutions clearly and accurately, supporting certification and mission readiness reviews.
- Adapt to first, second, and occasional third shift work to support program needs and critical test events, including days, nights, and weekends as required.
Essential Skills
- Direct, hands-on experience testing integrated satellite or spacecraft vehicles at the system level.
- Experience developing and/or executing system-level test plans and procedures for spacecraft or satellite systems.
- Strong understanding of interfaces and interactions between multiple spacecraft subsystems, such as Electrical, EPS, GN&C, C&DH, Propulsion, Thermal, and Power.
- Proficiency with Python, C++, or another object-oriented programming language for test scripting and automation.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex system anomalies and drive them to resolution.
- Experience with integrated spacecraft test planning, procedures, scripting, and execution.
- Knowledge of system-level troubleshooting and anomaly resolution processes in a spacecraft test environment.
- Ability to support first, second, and occasional third shifts to meet program and test schedule demands.
- Active TS clearance with SCI eligibility strongly preferred due to the classified nature of the work.
- Strong ownership mindset, adaptability, and ability to work through program roadblocks in a fast-paced environment.
- Qualification level ranging from Level 3 through Level 6, with consideration for exceptional Level 2 candidates.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge of Electrical, EPS, GN&C, C&DH, Propulsion, Thermal, Power, or related spacecraft subsystems and their integration at the vehicle level.
- Experience using COSMOS or similar ground software for command and telemetry during spacecraft testing.
- Familiarity with network architecture concepts relevant to integrated spacecraft test environments.
- Experience with Matlab and LabVIEW for data analysis, test control, and instrumentation integration.
- Experience in TVAC (thermal vacuum) testing, including planning, execution, and monitoring of spacecraft performance under environmental stress.
- Exposure to EMI/EMC testing and understanding of electromagnetic compatibility considerations for spacecraft systems.
- Experience with test automation frameworks and methodologies to improve test efficiency and repeatability.
- Ability to work effectively with test leads and multidisciplinary spacecraft subsystem teams in a collaborative environment.
- Strong communication skills to clearly convey test results, technical issues, and resolutions to engineering stakeholders.
- Interest in contributing to the design, development, testing, and certification of aerospace systems, including structures, propulsion, thermal controls, electrical systems, communications, embedded systems, and electronics.
Work EnvironmentThis role is primarily onsite due to the classified nature of the work and the need for direct interaction with integrated spacecraft hardware. Engineers will work closely with test leads and spacecraft subsystem teams in a highly collaborative, mission-focused environment. Standard shifts include first shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., second shift from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and third shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with the expectation of supporting days, nights, weekends, and temporary 24/7 coverage during TVAC or other critical test events. The environment involves working directly with spacecraft test equipment, ground support systems, and software tools such as COSMOS, Matlab, LabVIEW, and network architecture utilities. Engineers can expect a dynamic atmosphere where they contribute directly to product readiness, environmental testing, anomaly resolution, and mission preparation, with strong potential for long-term engagement and career growth.
