Job Title: Site Safety Representative Substation & Data Center ProjectsJob DescriptionThis role serves as the full-time on-site safety representative for greenfield and upgrade substation projects that support mission-critical facilities such as data centers, renewable energy assets, and power generation sites. You will provide comprehensive safety oversight for substation foundations, inside electrical work, and substation structures, including downstream tie-ins to BESS, solar, wind, and data center infrastructure. Acting in an owners representative capacity, you will oversee subcontractors, champion a strong safety culture, and ensure strict adherence to regulatory and site-specific safety requirements across nationally distributed project sites.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the full-time on-site safety representative for new and upgrade substation construction projects, including greenfield builds for data centers.
- Provide safety oversight and management for substation foundations, inside electrical work, and substation structures, including tie-ins to BESS, solar, wind, and data center projects.
- Act in an owners representative capacity while overseeing subcontracted construction work and ensuring alignment with project safety expectations.
- Oversee and support safety performance for field personnel, typically ranging from 1 to 25 workers per project.
- Monitor daily field activities to identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks on substation and inside electrical job sites.
- Ensure subcontractors follow all project-specific safety plans, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and walkthroughs of substation and inside electrical work areas to verify compliance and safe work practices.
- Document safety observations, inspections, and corrective actions using tablets and computer-based systems.
- Report safety activities, incidents, near misses, and corrective measures accurately and in a timely manner using IT and reporting tools.
- Support incident investigations and root cause analyses, and help develop and implement preventive actions.
- Communicate safety expectations clearly to subcontractors and field personnel, reinforcing a strong safety culture on site.
- Coordinate and collaborate with project teams, field supervisors, and subcontractors to resolve safety concerns and remove safety-related obstacles.
- Provide ongoing safety guidance, coaching, and feedback to field personnel to promote safe work practices and continuous improvement.
- Support the implementation, enforcement, and continuous improvement of site-specific safety programs and procedures.
- Lead and enforce robust Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) practices, particularly for substation downstream systems feeding critical data center loads.
- Ensure compliance with NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E requirements, especially in relation to arc flash hazards and electrical safety in data center environments.
- Coordinate closely with operations teams to manage substation downstream LOTO for utility feeds, medium-voltage switchgear, and low-voltage loads, ensuring safe isolation of components such as UPS systems and PDUs.
- Help prevent facility-wide outages and arc flash events by ensuring safe, well-coordinated LOTO and switching procedures.
- Maintain accurate safety records and documentation for compliance, internal reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Travel to various substation project sites across the United States as project needs require and adapt to new locations as projects change.
- Support safe execution of substation and power generation builds by being consistently present on site and minimizing extended time away from the project.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated substation safety management and oversight experience for a general contractor, EPC, or owner organization.
- Experience serving as the full-time site safety representative for a substation build or power generation project, with strong preference for substation work.
- Proven experience managing and overseeing subcontractors on construction projects, including enforcing safety standards and procedures.
- Strong expertise in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) practices, especially for substation downstream systems in data center or mission-critical environments.
- In-depth knowledge and practical application of NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E requirements related to electrical safety and arc flash protection.
- Ability to coordinate LOTO activities across utility feeds, medium-voltage switchgear, and low-voltage loads to safely isolate downstream components such as UPS and PDUs.
- Proficiency with IT systems for reporting safety activities, incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
- Comfort and competence using tablets and computers for safety documentation, inspections, and reporting.
- Ability and willingness to travel nationally to project sites across the United States, including relocation from one project location to another as assignments change.
- Current OSHA 30, OSHA 500, or OSHA 510 training.
- Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- Ability to remain on site consistently without major or extended time off during active project phases.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey safety expectations and requirements to field personnel and subcontractors.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, field supervisors, subcontractors, and operations personnel to resolve safety issues.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent recognized safety certification.
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification.
- Construction Health and Safety Technologist (CHST) certification.
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) certification.
- Graduate or Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
- Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STS-C) certification.
- Experience with substation projects supporting data centers, including greenfield builds and upgrades.
- Experience with safety oversight on power plants, renewable energy projects, or other high-voltage infrastructure.
- Familiarity with mission-critical environments where outage prevention and arc flash risk management are essential.
- Strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate safety records and documentation.
- Ability to adapt to varying project locations, site conditions, and project durations, typically around 89 months per project.
Work EnvironmentThis role is based on active construction sites for new and upgraded substations that support mission-critical facilities such as data centers, as well as inside electrical work associated with those substations. Current project needs include several locations, with one safety representative assigned per site, and future projects may be located anywhere in the United States. Typical projects last approximately 89 months, and mission-critical substation projects are national in scope, requiring flexibility to move from one location to another as projects conclude. The work schedule generally consists of six working days per week, reflecting the pace and demands of large-scale substation and data center construction. While there are no fixed rotation schedules for travel home during a project, leadership works with team members to arrange time at home a few times during the project, balancing project needs with personal time. The environment involves outdoor and indoor work around high-voltage equipment, substations, inside electrical rooms, and associated infrastructure, requiring strict adherence to safety procedures, including LOTO and NFPA 70/70E compliance. You will use tablets, computers, and IT systems extensively for safety reporting, documentation, and communication. The role includes national travel, GSA-based per diem for travel assignments, and a monthly truck stipend, reflecting the expectation that you will be mobile and present at various sites. The culture emphasizes long-term substation work, consistent safety leadership, and collaboration with field personnel and subcontractors to deliver safe, reliable power infrastructure for data centers and other critical facilities.
