Original job description

Job Title: Project ArchitectJob DescriptionThis Project Architect role focuses on high-end residential architecture, including estates, custom homes, and significant additions and renovations that emphasize a strong sense of place, legacy, and regional stewardship. You will guide projects from initial concept through construction, ensuring an exceptional client experience while collaborating closely with a highly engaged, design-focused team. The work blends traditional and classical architectural sensibilities with thoughtful innovation, and offers the opportunity to contribute to the next generation of high-end residential practice rather than a traditional old-guard firm.

Responsibilities

  • Lead residential architectural projects from pre-design through construction documentation, ensuring design integrity and alignment with client goals.
  • Utilize AutoCAD to develop complete architectural drawing sets, including plans, elevations, sections, details, and schedules for all project phases.
  • Manage day-to-day communication with clients, partners, consultants, and other project stakeholders throughout design and construction.
  • Provide construction observation services by visiting active job sites, reviewing progress, and coordinating with contractors to address design-related issues.
  • Survey existing structures, when applicable, with other team members to document existing conditions and inform renovation and addition work.
  • Supervise and mentor intern and junior architects, providing guidance, feedback, and support to develop their technical and design skills.
  • Coordinate and run projects independently while maintaining a highly collaborative approach with partners and colleagues.
  • Contribute to the firms ongoing development and growth by engaging in continuing education, sharing best practices, and participating actively in internal collaboration.
  • Support construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and helping ensure that construction aligns with design intent.
  • Manage multiple projects that typically range from approximately eight months to two years in duration, balancing quality, timelines, and client expectations.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in architecture, preferably with a focus on residential projects.
  • Bachelors degree in architecture.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for producing full architectural drawing sets.
  • Demonstrated experience running projects from start to finish, including design, documentation, and construction observation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and confidently with clients, consultants, and internal team members.
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and mentor intern and junior architects.
  • Interest in or experience with high-end residential architecture, including estates, custom homes, and substantial additions and renovations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Masters degree in architecture is preferred.
  • Architectural licensure is preferred, and the firm supports the licensure process with paid time off for exams, reimbursement for passed tests, and access to a study program subscription.
  • Experience with SketchUp is preferred.
  • Experience with Lumion is preferred.
  • Experience with Adobe software, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, is preferred.
  • Experience with traditional or classical architecture, including detailed trim work and historically informed design, is ideal but not mandatory.
  • Construction administration experience, including coordination with contractors and consultants, is highly valued.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative environment where larger, outgoing personalities and active participation are encouraged.
  • Willingness to relocate, with potential support for relocation costs.

Work EnvironmentThe firm focuses on high-end residential projects, including large estates and custom homes, with construction costs typically starting around $2 million for additions and renovations and ranging from approximately $5 million to over $30 million for new homes. The project mix is roughly 70% renovations and additions and 30% new homes, often at an estate level. The team operates in a highly collaborative yet independent environment, where each architect runs their own projects while engaging actively with colleagues. The culture values strong communication, energetic participation, and a forward-looking approach to residential design. The office is based in the greater Philadelphia region, with projects located across the country, along the Eastern Seaboard, and in Canada. The firm provides parking passes and supports professional growth through exam-related PTO, reimbursement for passed licensing exams, and access to a structured study program. Starting in 2027, team members may work remotely one day per week, typically on Monday or Friday, while the remainder of the week is spent in the office to support collaboration and mentorship.
