Job Title: Power Systems Design EngineerJob DescriptionThe Power Systems Design Engineer will lead the design and analysis of industrial power distribution systems, supporting a full-service electrical engineering practice focused on medium and low voltage applications. In this role, you will apply deep technical expertise in power system design and studies to improve the productivity, cost efficiency, and safety of industrial operations. You will also have the opportunity to manage or mentor a team of engineers, contributing both technical leadership and project oversight in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design medium and low voltage power distribution systems for new installations and retrofit projects in industrial facilities.
  • Complete comprehensive power system studies, including short circuit analysis, arc flash analysis, protective device coordination, grounding studies, power quality assessments, and energy savings projects.
  • Provide control system design for power distribution systems, including specification of protective relays and programming of protective devices.
  • Document electrical systems by preparing single-line diagrams, developing electrical control schematics, and compiling equipment ratings and settings.
  • Support new construction and retrofit electrical system design projects from concept through detailed design and implementation.
  • Collaborate with equipment suppliers to develop cost estimates and assist in proposal preparation for new projects.
  • Perform project planning, coordination, and supervision, ensuring technical quality, schedule adherence, and effective resource utilization.
  • Work directly with clients on-site to determine optimal system requirements, design constraints, and project objectives.
  • Provide testing and data collection support for new project development, including troubleshooting power system failures and supporting new system designs.
  • Lead or contribute to power system studies using specialized software tools such as SKM and ETAP to evaluate system performance and safety.
  • Participate in the specification of MV/LV switchgear, transformers, and related power distribution components to meet project and code requirements.
  • Support the development of proposals, technical reports, and other project documentation with clear, concise technical writing.
  • Offer technical guidance and, where applicable, managerial support to a team of engineers, fostering collaboration and high-quality project delivery.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience, preferably 510 years, in the design of power distribution systems for industrial facilities.
  • Completion of a 4-year accredited Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE); Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred; if not licensed, Engineer-in-Training (FE) with a clear path toward obtaining PE licensure is required.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial power distribution design, including medium and low voltage systems.
  • Hands-on experience in power studies such as short circuit analysis, arc flash studies, and protective device coordination.
  • Proficiency with SKM power system modeling software for developing time-current curves (TCCs) and analyzing arc flash incident energy for new equipment designs.
  • Experience using ETAP or similar tools for power system analysis.
  • Ability to specify MV/LV switchgear, transformers, and associated power distribution components.
  • Experience specifying protective devices, including fuses, circuit breakers, and protective relays.
  • Extensive knowledge of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) requirements as they relate to power system design.
  • Capability to read and create single-line and three-line diagrams using AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of power system control systems, with SEL relay experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to design electrical control systems related to power system control.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for direct interaction with customers and project stakeholders.
  • Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving power system issues.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows, and AutoCAD.
  • Ability and willingness to manage or supervise a team of engineers.
