Job Title: Plant Layout EngineerJob DescriptionThe Plant Layout Engineer develops and maintains highly coordinated 3D factory layouts using BIM tools to support efficient, safe, and scalable manufacturing operations. This role establishes BIM standards, integrates complex equipment models, and ensures seamless coordination between equipment, utilities, infrastructure, and material flow. The engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams and vendors to deliver accurate, clash-free models and documentation that guide real-world plant design and construction.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain BIM standards for equipment naming, family classifications, file organization, model ownership, approval workflows, and revision control.
- Integrate manufacturing equipment CAD models into Revit, simplifying complex assemblies while preserving critical geometry, maintenance clearances, and coordination requirements.
- Develop and maintain standardized Revit families, equipment libraries, templates, and custom views to support consistent factory modeling.
- Build and maintain coordinated 3D factory layouts in Revit, including equipment, pallets, material flow aisles, utility connections, and volumetric envelopes across multiple elevations.
- Develop and maintain federated Navisworks models to combine and coordinate 3D models from multiple disciplines and identify potential layout conflicts.
- Perform clash detection and clearance analysis across manufacturing and facility systems, track tagged conflicts and viewpoints, and support resolution of issues.
- Maintain equipment parameters, monitor and optimize model health, and manage CAD/Revit importexport workflows.
- Prepare compatible geometry and exports (such as .fbx or .stp files) to support FlexSim and other simulation tools.
- Manage Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) projects, including model publishing, user permissions, and version control.
- Use Bluebeam to review drawings, perform markups, and coordinate engineering changes and drawing revisions.
- Maintain standardized factory base models and migrate legacy 2D CAD layouts into Revit-based 3D environments.
- Develop 3D models from 2D factory layouts and keep both 2D and 3D representations synchronized.
- Create accurate 3D models of manufacturing equipment and integrate them into plant layouts, ensuring proper interfaces with utilities and material handling systems.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors to obtain, validate, and integrate model data and technical specifications.
- Collaborate with industrial engineering, manufacturing, construction, and facilities teams to ensure that digital models align with real plant requirements.
- Manage change and version control for models, maintain a clear release and approval history, and ensure data integrity across all BIM assets.
- Produce and maintain factory BIM models that integrate equipment, utilities, infrastructure, and material flow in Revit.
- Deliver standardized libraries, including optimized equipment families, BIM templates, and custom view configurations.
- Generate Navisworks clash reports with tagged clashes, assigned owners, and documented resolution tracking.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including ACC-published models, Bluebeam markups, drawing revisions, and archived layouts.
- Validate equipment data, produce model health reports, and ensure exports are compatible with simulation and downstream engineering workflows.
Essential Skills
- Advanced proficiency in Revit for 3D plant modeling, equipment integration, family creation, model optimization, and BIM-based factory layouts.
- Strong AutoCAD skills for 2D layouts, CAD interoperability, and integration of legacy drawings into Revit models.
- Hands-on experience with Navisworks Manage for model federation, clash detection, clearance analysis, and issue tracking.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) for cloud collaboration, model publishing, permissions management, and version control.
- Experience using Bluebeam for drawing reviews, markups, coordination of engineering changes, and revision control.
- Demonstrated capability in manufacturing BIM, including factory layouts, equipment utility interfaces, material handling, and multidisciplinary coordination.
- Solid understanding of BIM governance, including modeling standards, shared coordinates, data integrity, model health monitoring, and engineering workflows.
- Ability to build and maintain 3D plant models in Revit and keep them aligned with 2D layouts.
- Experience in creating accurate 3D models of manufacturing equipment and integrating them into plant layouts.
- Skill in developing 3D models from 2D factory layouts and maintaining synchronization between 2D and 3D environments.
- Ability to use Navisworks to combine and coordinate 3D models and identify potential layout conflicts.
- Strong design and equipment layout skills with attention to clearances, access, and maintainability.
- Competence in managing change and version control, including maintaining clear release and approval histories for models and drawings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with automation and integration across Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Inventor, Bluebeam, and ACC.
- Familiarity with preparing geometry and exports such as .fbx or .stp files for use in FlexSim or similar simulation tools.
- Experience in vendor coordination, including obtaining and validating equipment model data and specifications.
- Background in cross-functional collaboration with industrial engineering, manufacturing, construction, and facilities teams.
- Experience maintaining standardized factory base models and migrating legacy CAD layouts into Revit.
- Ability to troubleshoot modeling issues, coordinate alignment problems, and software integration challenges in a BIM environment.
