Job Title: Piping DesignerJob DescriptionThe Piping Designer will independently deliver accurate, highquality piping designs and drawings for complex projects, using 2D and 3D CAD tools. This role combines office-based design and modeling work with field activities such as walk-downs and dimensional verification, ensuring that piping systems are safe, economical, constructible, and aligned with project requirements and engineering standards.
Responsibilities
- Complete assigned piping design projects on time and with a high level of accuracy while working independently and collaborating with team leaders and project managers to develop scope and procedures.
- Perform design and drafting assignments using AutoCAD 2D and 3D techniques to produce plans, sections, details, and construction drawings for piping systems.
- Draft plans and construction drawings that reflect the operation, layout, and routing of piping systems in alignment with project requirements and industry practices.
- Conduct field work, including site walk-downs, locating tie-ins, and producing accurate, dimensioned field sketches to support design development.
- Build accurate 3D equipment models based on vendor data, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Create precise piping isometric drawings and develop accurate Bills of Material to support procurement and construction activities.
- Prepare layouts, designs, and 3D models of complex piping systems based on Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Generate complex structural models as needed, and coordinate and troubleshoot the structural model with structural engineers to resolve clashes and design issues.
- Interpret piping stress analysis reports and collaborate with stress engineers to establish safe, economical piping configurations and support arrangements.
- Manage and communicate effectively with third-party designers to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency in the work product.
- Mentor and train other designers and drafters, providing guidance on standards, tools, and best practices.
- Generate and maintain line lists and tie-in lists, ensuring accuracy and alignment with P&IDs and project documentation.
- Actively participate in P&ID review meetings and lead or drive 3D model review discussions with the technical project team, third-party designers, and customers.
- Utilize scanned point cloud files to develop accurate piping models that reflect existing conditions.
- Follow established engineering standards, formats, and procedures to create, update, revise, and modify drawings, and contribute to the development and improvement of these standards.
- Use sketches, notes, and other input materials to generate clear, complete, and accurate drawings and models.
- Identify and report design changes and errors to the lead designer or project team, and manage the drawing and model revision process effectively.
- Learn and adapt quickly to assigned project tasks, taking initiative to move work forward and manage multiple responsibilities and priorities.
- Take responsibility for the quality of work produced, applying continuous improvement methods and recommending specific opportunities to enhance design processes and deliverables.
- Incorporate safety, operability, maintainability, and constructability considerations into all design work.
- Review and check work prepared by others, providing constructive feedback to improve accuracy, quality, and consistency.
- Develop man-hour estimates for design services within the project scope, monitor progress against budgeted hours and schedule, and report status to the project team.
- Actively participate in project meetings and design/model reviews, providing accurate feedback on design progress, issues, and proposed solutions.
Essential Skills
- Previous piping design experience in an industrial or similar environment.
- 3D modeling experience for piping and equipment layouts.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD (current version or within the last three versions) in both 2D and 3D applications.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, including P&IDs, plans, sections, and isometrics.
- Strong computer skills, including effective use of MS Office applications.
- Ability to interpret piping stress analysis reports and collaborate with stress engineers on design decisions.
- Capability to conduct field walk-downs, identify tie-in locations, and produce accurate, dimensioned field sketches.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality drawings and models.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while meeting project deadlines.
