Job Title: NVH / Chassis Dyno TechnicianJob DescriptionThis role provides hands-on technician support for noise and vibration (NVH) and chassis dynamometer testing in a full-vehicle lab environment. You will plan and execute tests, install and remove instrumentation, operate test automation and driving robots, and ensure high-quality, on-time delivery of test data that supports federal and internal engineering requirements. The position involves close collaboration with engineering teams throughout the vehicle development process and requires strong mechanical aptitude, data acquisition skills, and the ability to manage multiple assignments with minimal supervision. Opportunities are available across all three shifts.Responsibilities
- Plan, build, install, and teardown instrumentation for a wide range of NVH and chassis dyno tests requested by engineering teams.
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot test automation systems and non-intrusive driving robots used in chassis dyno testing.
- Evaluate test results and produce accurate, high-quality test data in accordance with Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS), federal regulatory requirements, and documented GMW and NHTSA procedures.
- Investigate mechanical and electrical operational issues on vehicles, components, and test properties, and recommend or implement corrective actions.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and computer/software issues related to test equipment, instrumentation, and vehicles under test.
- Schedule workload, test equipment usage, and equipment calibration to meet test timelines and ensure efficient lab operations.
- Install vehicles into chassis dyno cells, including centering, strapping, and configuring them for testing, and remove vehicles upon test completion.
- Monitor vehicle performance and test conditions during dyno operations and adjust setups as needed based on test requirements and data trends.
- Work with vehicle communication and data acquisition tools such as INCA, V-spy, General CAN tools, and NeoVi to configure tests and collect data.
- Follow a work ticket and scheduling system to prepare test cells, coordinate test timing, and move between dyno cells to support multiple projects as needed.
- Collaborate closely with engineering teams and other technicians to run drive cycles that simulate on-road conditions, collect and review data, and make changes such as component swaps or adjustments based on test findings.
- Perform mechanical assembly and disassembly of vehicle components, including overhead and under-dash work, to support instrumentation and test configurations.
- Use hand tools and air tools safely and effectively for vehicle and equipment assembly, disassembly, and instrumentation tasks.
- Operate vehicle movers, walkies, or fork trucks to move vehicles and test equipment safely within the lab and shop areas.
- Manage multiple assignments simultaneously, coordinating priorities and timelines while maintaining a high level of quality and safety.
- Maintain accurate documentation of test setups, procedures, and results, and ensure confidentiality of all customer and test data.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement ideas for test processes, equipment usage, and lab operations.
- Maintain good housekeeping in the lab and shop, follow safe work practices, and support a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
Essential Skills
- Minimum two-year associate degree in automotive technology or equivalent, such as ASE Master Mechanic with multiple years of dealership experience.
- 25 years of electrical and/or mechanical hands-on experience, ideally in automotive or related testing environments.
- Automotive mechanical skills with demonstrated ability to take components and systems apart and reassemble them correctly.
- Instrumentation experience, including installation, troubleshooting, and repair of test instrumentation.
- Data acquisition experience, including configuration, data collection, review, and troubleshooting of test data.
- Chassis dynamometer experience, including vehicle setup, operation, and monitoring during dyno tests.
- Valid drivers license and ability to operate vehicles safely in a test and shop environment.
- Excellent mechanical assembly and disassembly skills, including overhead and under-dash operations.
- Experience using hand tools and air tools for automotive and test-related tasks.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and in team settings.
- Effective time management skills and the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments.
- Ability to handle basic project assignments with minimal supervision and maintain accountability for quality and deadlines.
- Physical ability to repeatedly perform activities involving bending, twisting, pulling, and lifting vehicle components up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to move test equipment and portable tools weighing approximately 70200 pounds around the shop as required.
- Ability to stand for long periods while performing build and test tasks.
- Ability to operate vehicle movers, walkies, or fork trucks safely and in accordance with lab procedures.
- Commitment to maintaining good housekeeping, safe work practices, and confidentiality of all customer and test data.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associates degree in automotive technology or higher; a four-year technology degree is beneficial but not required.
- ASE Master Mechanic certification with multiple years of dealership experience considered as an equivalent experience.
- 25 years of experience specifically involving electrical and/or mechanical hands-on work in automotive or related fields.
- Experience with vehicle communication tools such as INCA, V-spy, General CAN tools, and NeoVi.
- Knowledge of instrumentation installation best practices, including routing, mounting, and protecting sensors and wiring in a vehicle environment.
- Experience troubleshooting test automation systems and non-intrusive driving robots.
- Familiarity with Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS), GMW procedures, and NHTSA test procedures is an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new software and test systems quickly, with strong overall computer and software aptitude.
- Team-oriented and self-motivated mindset, with a willingness to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers.
- Experience working with scheduled test tickets or work order systems in a lab or shop environment.
- Experience in noise and vibration testing or related NVH environments is a plus.
Work EnvironmentThis role is based in a noise and vibration (NVH) and chassis dynamometer laboratory focused on full-vehicle testing. You will work in dyno cells and shop areas where vehicles are brought in, centered on the dyno, strapped down, and run through various drive cycles to simulate real-world road conditions. The environment involves frequent interaction with engineering teams and other technicians, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, communication, and shared problem-solving. Work is scheduled through an online schedule and work ticket system, and you may support 15 tickets per week, with the number of tests per ticket varying based on data needs and test changes. You may move between dyno cells during the day to assist different projects and teams. The role requires regular use of hand and air tools, vehicle movers, walkies, and fork trucks, as well as computer-based tools such as Microsoft Office, INCA, V-spy, General CAN tools, and NeoVi. The position supports all three shifts, so schedules may vary based on lab needs. The work is physically active, requiring standing for long periods, bending, twisting, and lifting vehicle components and test equipment. The lab promotes good housekeeping, safe work practices, and continuous improvement, creating a professional, safety-focused environment where quality test data and on-time delivery are critical.
