Job Title: OSP Fiber Designer / DrafterJob DescriptionThis role focuses on designing outside plant (OSP) fiber networks, including both aerial and underground installations, using AutoCAD and Katapult. The designer works with existing utility pole data, prepares and tracks pole attachment applications, and produces detailed fiber design drawings that support high-volume deployment projects in the Louisville, KY area. The position offers strong growth potential, with opportunities to move into leadership roles as the organization continues to expand.Responsibilities
- Design OSP fiber networks, including both aerial/overhead and underground routes, using AutoCAD and Katapult.
- Work with existing utility pole data that has been collected and imported into Katapult, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Review pole information such as photos, pole heights, and existing attachments to determine appropriate fiber attachment locations.
- Support the processing and submission of pole attachment applications for fiber deployment projects.
- Submit pole attachment applications through the applicable electric utility or pole-owner portals and systems.
- Monitor submitted applications for feedback, comments, corrections, and status changes, and respond promptly as needed.
- Maintain a detailed tracker showing the status of all pole attachment applications and keep stakeholders updated.
- Perform precise AutoCAD drafting and design work to create construction-ready fiber plans and documentation.
- Support fiber engineering activities related to both aerial and underground installation, including consideration of slack loops, splice cans, and other fiber components.
- Coordinate with the field team and internal fiber/design team when additional field information, verification, or clarification is required.
- Collaborate with external stakeholders, including utilities and pole owners, to ensure designs and applications align with their standards and requirements.
- Contribute to high-volume fiber deployment projects, helping to meet project schedules and quality expectations.
- Participate in ongoing process improvements and best practices related to OSP fiber design and pole attachment workflows.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of recent, hands-on AutoCAD design experience specifically in OSP fiber projects, including both aerial/overhead and underground fiber.
- Minimum 6 months of experience using Katapult for fiber design and utility pole data management.
- Strong knowledge of utility poles and pole attachments, including a clear understanding of communications (telecom) versus electric utility power space.
- Ability to interpret and work with pole data, including photos, heights, and existing attachments.
- General understanding of fiber engineering concepts and components, such as slack loops, splice cans, and related outside plant elements.
- Demonstrated experience as an OSP fiber designer rather than a generic CAD drafter, with specific focus on fiber/OSP projects.
- Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD drafting for outside plant and overhead fiber design.
- Familiarity with telecommunication and outside plant (OSP) practices and terminology.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience processing pole attachment applications from initial submission through approval.
- Experience using O-Calc or IKE tools to support pole analysis and loading calculations.
- Experience working with electric utility or pole-owner attachment portals and online systems.
- Prior involvement in high-volume fiber deployment projects with multiple concurrent applications and designs.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with field teams, internal design teams, and external stakeholders.
- Interest in long-term career growth, with the ambition to move into management or leadership roles as the organization expands.
