Original job description

Position Summary

The Distribution Engineer I role is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical Engineer looking to build a long-term career in the power utility industry. You'll work under the guidance of experienced technical leads to design and support overhead and underground electrical distribution systems ranging from 4kV to 138kV. This position offers exposure to utility design, field engineering, construction support, permitting, outage analysis, and modern utility technologies used to maintain and expand critical power infrastructure.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Design and develop work packages for overhead and underground distribution projects
Perform engineering calculations, including pole loading, guying, conductor sag and tension, and voltage drop analysis
Utilize AutoCAD, GIS platforms, and utility-specific design software to create engineering designs
Conduct field visits to gather project data, inspect existing infrastructure, and support engineering decisions
Prepare permitting documentation, easements, and right-of-way applications
Support construction activities by answering technical questions and reviewing field changes
Participate in outage investigations and root cause analysis efforts
Coordinate with project teams, field personnel, utilities, and other stakeholders to deliver safe and reliable designs
Learn and apply utility-specific engineering and construction standards

Long-Term Opportunity

This position offers a strong career path within the growing power and utilities sector. Engineers gain hands-on experience with utility design, field operations, permitting, construction support, GIS systems, project management, and power distribution engineering. The role provides structured training, mentorship from experienced engineers, and opportunities to take on greater technical responsibility as skills and experience grow.

Work Environment

The role is primarily office-based, utilizing engineering software such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, GE Smallworld, and Bentley Expert Designer, with approximately 10% field work performing site visits, inspections, and occasional storm support activities. The environment is collaborative, technical, and focused on learning, safety, and long-term professional growth.
