Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer (Contract) Job DescriptionThis contract Manufacturing Engineer role focuses on hands-on support of CNC machining operations, with an emphasis on documenting machining processes, optimizing CNC setups, and resolving shop-floor issues. You will work closely with machinists to capture tribal knowledge, translate it into clear documentation, and ensure that machining processes for mills and lathes run efficiently, consistently, and correctly in a fast-paced, high-mix metal machining environment.Responsibilities
- Develop and update detailed CNC machining setup sheets for lathes and mills, ensuring accuracy, repeatability, and ease of use for machinists.
- Create clear work instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for machining processes that currently rely on undocumented tribal knowledge.
- Troubleshoot machining issues directly on the shop floor, collaborating with machinists to diagnose problems and implement effective solutions quickly.
- Verify proper CNC machine setup and adherence to defined processes, ensuring parts are dialed in correctly and preventing incorrect or out-of-spec runs.
- Shadow shop floor employees to observe existing machining practices and convert their expertise into formal, standardized documentation.
- Continuously refine and optimize CNC setup activities to improve throughput, quality, and consistency in a high-mix machining environment.
- Ensure that all documentation, including setup sheets, job setup sheets, setup cards, process sheets, operation sheets, and tool sheets, is accurate, current, and accessible.
Essential Skills
- Strong CNC metal machining background with hands-on experience working with mills and/or lathes.
- Proven ability to create detailed setup sheets, SOPs, and machining documentation, including job setup sheets, setup cards, process sheets, operation sheets, and tool sheets.
- Hands-on troubleshooting experience on the shop floor, working directly with machinists and CNC equipment.
- Experience with manufacturing or process engineering in a machining environment.
- Ability to work independently and hit the ground running with minimal direction.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-mix machining environment handling a variety of parts and setups.
- Experience working with metals in CNC machining processes.
- Familiarity with CNC machines, CNC mills, and CNC lathes, including setup activities and router or routing documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Strong desire for candidates with a deep CNC machining background and practical experience in both mills and lathes.
- Demonstrated ability to capture and formalize tribal knowledge into clear, standardized work instructions and SOPs.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure process documentation accurately reflects shop-floor practices and requirements.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with machinists and other shop-floor personnel while documenting and improving processes.
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to quickly assess machining issues and implement corrective actions.
Work EnvironmentThis role is based in a hands-on, shop-floor manufacturing environment focused on CNC machining of metal components. You will spend significant time on the production floor working directly with CNC mills, CNC lathes, and related equipment, observing setups and troubleshooting live machining operations. The environment is fast-paced with a high mix of different parts and setups, requiring flexibility and responsiveness. Work will involve close collaboration with machinists and production staff, and may require appropriate industrial attire suitable for a machining and manufacturing setting.
