Job Title: Civil/Structural Engineer

Job Description

The Engineer IV, Civil/Structural is responsible for independently performing engineering analyses, calculations, evaluations, and design activities supporting commercial nuclear power generation facilities. This position requires a robust technical foundation in structural engineering principles, nuclear plant design requirements, and applicable industry codes and standards. The successful candidate will apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate existing plant conditions, develop practical engineering solutions, and support modifications that enhance plant safety, reliability, and performance. This role involves limited supervision and includes executing assigned engineering tasks, supporting multidisciplinary project teams, reviewing technical work products, and providing guidance to less experienced engineers and designers.

Responsibilities

Perform civil and structural engineering analyses and design activities supporting nuclear power plant modifications, upgrades, and modernization projects.
Develop engineering calculations, design change packages, engineering evaluations, specifications, and supporting technical documentation.
Apply engineering principles related to structural steel design, reinforced concrete design, seismic analysis, and finite element analysis.
Evaluate existing plant conditions and develop engineering solutions that improve plant safety, reliability, operability, and regulatory compliance.
Support development of design criteria, engineering recommendations, technical specifications, and project scopes of work.
Prepare and review engineering work products in accordance with applicable quality assurance requirements and nuclear industry standards.
Independently execute engineering assignments and major portions of larger projects.
Coordinate engineering activities with multidisciplinary project teams and client representatives.
Support project schedules, deliverables, budgets, and quality requirements.
Participate in design reviews, project meetings, technical discussions, and client interactions.
Conduct plant walkdowns and field evaluations to support engineering design activities and modification projects.
Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and designers.
Review engineering work products prepared by others for technical accuracy and completeness.
Assist in resolving technical issues affecting plant operations, project execution, and regulatory compliance.
Support implementation of engineering best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Serve as a technical resource on assigned projects and work scopes.

Essential Skills

Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
Minimum seven (7) years of relevant engineering experience.
Minimum five (5) years of commercial nuclear power experience.
Demonstrated experience performing engineering calculations, structural analyses, technical evaluations, and design modifications.
Experience supporting nuclear plant modifications, design change packages, or engineering change activities.
Experience utilizing ANSYS for structural analysis and finite element modeling.
Experience utilizing GT STRUDL for structural analysis and modeling.
Experience utilizing AutoPIPE and/or CAESAR II for piping and stress analysis activities.
Working knowledge of structural steel and reinforced concrete design principles.
Demonstrated knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including ACI, AISC, ASCE 4, ASCE 7, and AWS.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience with structural software such as AutoCAD and Autodesk structural design software.
Exposure to critical modernization and digital transformation initiatives within the nuclear power industry.
Opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with experienced engineering professionals and direct client interaction.
Exposure to cutting-edge digital control technologies supporting the future of nuclear generation.

Work Environment

Remote flexibility is available based on experience level. Candidates with significant nuclear experience (approximately 8 years) may be considered for greater remote flexibility. Mid-level candidates are expected to work from office locations in Charlotte, Stonington CT, or Williamsburg VA. Travel is expected approximately one week per month to maintain badge access, with additional travel potentially required during plant outages or implementation activities. All candidates must be capable of obtaining and maintaining nuclear plant access credentials, which include a drug screening, export control review, psychological evaluation, and nuclear site badging requirements.
