Job Title: 2D Design Engineer / Layout EngineerJob DescriptionThis role leads end-to-end site and factory layout management at both building and campus levels, with a strong focus on 2D design. The 2D Design Engineer designs, optimizes, and scales manufacturing facilities by integrating production systems, material flow, warehouse operations, and site infrastructure into a cohesive and efficient layout. The position combines industrial engineering expertise, data-driven analysis, and cross-functional leadership to support large-scale manufacturing growth and long-term site development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead factory layout design across manufacturing lines, warehouse and storage areas, material flow paths, people flow routes, and ancillary and support spaces.
  • Develop long-term site master plans that support phased capacity expansion and future scalability at both building and campus levels.
  • Define and implement layout governance and standards, including change management processes, visual factory standards, drafting standards, and layout management processes.
  • Create and maintain block layouts and detailed 2D and 3D layouts aligned with the Plan of Record and evolving business requirements.
  • Design and optimize end-to-end material flow, including inbound logistics, internal work-in-progress (WIP) movement, and outbound finished goods flow.
  • Own and manage overall site layout, including building placement, external logistics flow such as truck movement, dock doors, and yards, as well as utilities and infrastructure planning.
  • Optimize dock utilization, yard flow, and transportation interfaces to improve logistics efficiency at the site level.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in Manufacturing, Operations, Supply Chain, Facilities, Construction, and EHS to align layout requirements and ensure seamless execution.
  • Perform data-driven analysis to optimize space utilization, flow efficiency, labor productivity, and overall cost performance.
  • Develop and integrate a comprehensive plan for every part into layout decisions, including storage strategies, packaging concepts, and line-side delivery approaches.
  • Define and track layout performance metrics such as flow distance, aisle utilization, space density, throughput, and bottleneck locations.
  • Support capacity planning and modeling using OEE, cycle time analysis, and throughput simulations to validate layout performance.
  • Drive factory densification initiatives by eliminating non-value-added movement and improving layout efficiency across the site.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and layout validation during site construction, equipment installation, and production ramp-up phases.
  • Translate complex layout and operational data into clear, executive-level insights and presentations to support strategic decision-making.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of experience in site or factory layout planning, industrial engineering, or manufacturing systems.
  • Experience working in large-scale manufacturing environments such as automotive, battery, energy, or other heavy manufacturing settings.
  • Strong understanding of site planning, material flow, and facility design principles.
  • Proficiency in 2D layout design and the ability to develop clear, accurate factory and site layouts.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform data-driven analysis to optimize space, flow, productivity, and cost.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage complex, cross-functional projects across site and factory levels.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders from shop floor teams to executive leadership.
  • Systems-thinking mindset with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in greenfield site development and large-scale factory ramp-up projects.
  • Proven experience in site master planning, including yard design, dock strategy, and infrastructure planning.
  • Hands-on experience with warehouse design and material handling systems such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and conveyors.
  • Proficiency in layout tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar 2D and 3D design software.
  • Experience with simulation tools, for example FlexSim, for factory and logistics modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of capacity modeling and labor industrial engineering methodologies, including OEE, line balancing, takt time, and cycle time analysis.
  • Experience working with construction and facilities teams on site execution and infrastructure integration.
  • Familiarity with safety, environmental, and regulatory considerations in site and facility design.
  • Experience in program management, including planning, coordination, and delivery of complex layout and site projects.
  • Demonstrated competence in design-focused roles, particularly related to industrial and manufacturing environments.

Work EnvironmentThe role operates in a large-scale manufacturing and industrial environment that includes factories, warehouses, yards, and broader campus sites. You will work closely with cross-functional teams in Manufacturing, Operations, Supply Chain, Facilities, Construction, and EHS, often coordinating activities across both office and shop floor settings. The position involves extensive use of 2D and 3D layout tools such as AutoCAD or Revit, as well as simulation tools like FlexSim for factory and logistics modeling. The work environment is fast-paced and high-growth, with multiple concurrent projects and evolving site requirements. You will contribute to greenfield developments, site expansions, and production ramp-ups, engaging in both strategic planning and hands-on layout validation during installation and commissioning phases.
